WALLACE, will regret to learn that his \ Mayor Goodeve, has decided ahd prepare for market ore, metal and minera netatatioes of ail ‘kinds, whether the propert; fhe Company or not, in British Caluabin, and to carry on any metallurgical operationy which. may again enter the field as a candidate Personal interests have suffered through the for mayoralty honors. fact that he has given the affairs o! the city that time which could have been used to advantage in advanc- ing his own business, and he feels that he has, to the best of his abil- ity, discharged the trust which the people at the last election imposed The Recorp feels that it is voicing the sentiment of the people in the assertion that the chief executive and the members of the municipal board have done their duty, and have done it in a manner esteem upon him. that has won the respect, and fid of the It can, only be hoped'that their su: cesscrs, whoever they may be, will accomplish as much for the’ ad- vancement of the city’s welfare, and close their term of office with equal satisfaction to the public. The Rossland Miner, however, doesn’t seem to concur in this opin- ion, and is not disposed to give the present administration credit tor -anything, beyond asserting that the policy:pursued during the year has not been in the interests of the city and that the members have sacri- ficed the public welfare in order to serve their personal interests. Then the Miner goes on with a long rig- marole of mythical statements about as far removed from facts as con- sistency, or rather inconsistency, will permit. lt kicks for the sake of kicking, or because it has a per- sonal grievance. But the Miner overlooks the fact that it used what- ever influence it’ had toward the election to officé of the men who have, -as it says, proven incompe- tent to discharge a public trust. The present mayor and, we think, every individual member of the ad- ministration, were strongly advo- cated for office by the Miner. If the Miner will refer to its files it will see how it rejoiced over the election of these same gentlemen whom it now seeks to malign; it will see that it advocated their election to the extent of its ability, and that it assured the people of a clean, careful, competent and busi- ness-like administration. In view.of these facts, it is ex- tremly poor taste for the Miner to publicly display its venom because it has a personal grievance. ee REAL . FIGHTING TO COME, It was anticipated that the Boers would achi the first of the war in South Africa, for seve | eral reasons. " They were numer- ically superior to the British, they ied all the best ge points, and they were ready to strike, _ When the war. broke out the great bulk of the British army was in England or on the sea in trans- ports,.and there was only a “thin red line” on the Transvaal frontiers. 1s Military experts’ at home and abroad expected to see this line driven back and all the British po- sitions and many of the towns tem- -porarily abandoned to the Boers. It was a serious question whether Kimberley could be held. “The ‘thin red line” has been forced back, but only after desp vantage. The British have gained the time they wanted. The army f} corps from England is arriving and will soon reinforce the troops at the front, and every day will add to the British strength, while there can hardly be any accession to the ranks of the Boers, who have every. avail- able man in service, British operations thus far have been entirely on the defensive, and could not be otherwise. The ob- vious plan was to maintain their ground as long as possible until Gen. Buller and his reinforcements should arrive, when offensive oper- ations would be begun. The war thus far is a preliminary to the real fighting, which will begin when the British move forward to attack the Boer strongholds. Then there will be mourning in thousands of homes in British land and Boer land. WHAT LEYDITE IS. Army officers in Washington, re- ferring§ to the .protes Boers against” the-use say the use of powerful explosives in shells has never been condemned by nations.
