Northern sys- tem either here or at Nelson, and it is consequently impossible for the Yankee lines to do any business. in the new territory without breaking carload lots here and transferring to ghe C. P. R. President Shaugh- néssy probably spoke in a Pick- wickian sense at Nelson when he said that he and‘Jim Hill meant to join rails here. Thus far nothing of the kind has been done and no- body expects that it will be. But the C. P. R. is justified in its monopolistic attitude. The road has. cost an immense amount of good money. Probably no stretch of. road: since the con- struction of the C. P. R. down the Fraser river has represented such heavy work. The railway engineers say that the 125 miles west of Rob- son represent an outlay of $3,000,- coo—close to $30,000. per mile. One:stretch of it near the summit represents $200,000 for two miles. There the roadway was caryed out of a solid rock bluff, which had to be blasted away fora depth of 75 feet. There is mo easy work from Robson to Cascade. Every inch of it-had to be wrested from a severe and rock-ribbed mountain side. But now that it is built the company is fairly. coining money from the traffic over the line. cee ne ee MARRIAGE OF MARTIN LYONS Weddoa to Miss Maggie Corbett of Montreal Today.
