Valdy may have come a long way from the days when he began performing just to feed himself but, despite success, his music hasn't changed. “I don't live with a jock strap and a Bowie knife like I did in the granola days,” he said. “I've got a dishwasher and a Porsche now. “It’s folk music,” he said. “And I try to keep it folk music myself.” In an interview with the Castlegar News Monday night at Red Mountain ski lodge in Rossland, Valdy said his values have remained the same and he tries to reflect that in his music. “A lot of people are calling my music pop or country rock,” said Valdy (he was nominated last year for a Juno in the best country male vocalist category). “People are really considering me something different.” Valdy spends much of his time on the road, Last year he performed 230 “one nighters,” leaving him only three months at home. “You pretty much concentrate all your energy on tours,” he said. “The road is work time. There's so few days spent at home, chores to do, a loving relationship to nurture, so it doesn’t lend itself to work. “Home is home. Although in, show business there's no differentiation between the two.” Nonetheless, show business has given Valdy its share of hardships as well as rewards. “I left my first wife and then my second wife left me,” he laughs. Valdy married again last August and, after only a short time at home, it was back to his busy schedule. A new record is in the works and, at the end of the month, he will be playing with the Victoria symphony orchestra. “That kind of thing is different,” he said. “It's very formal. I have to have all the songs arranged. “Any kind of challenge is good for the human spirit,” he said. Next month Valdy will spend two weeks playing concerts in the Northwest Territories as part of a promotion for the Canadian Native Arts Foundation. After that, he leaves for the Soviet Union, accompanied Come One, Come Alll To the Second Annual TALENT NIGHT Hosted by the Krestova Youth Choir At — Mount Sentinel Secondary School South Slocan, B.C. It becomes more noticeable and probably gets a bigger purse than if it was a government fundraiser.” But Valdy wasn’t always the big name musician that could draw attention to a cause. Born in Ottawa as Valdemar Horsdal 41 years ago, Valdy originally set out to be an architect. “] learned how to play guitar and drink beer in university and that was the end of my formal education.” In 1964, Valdy set out to hitchhike to the Peace River country. “| got as far as Winnipeg and ran out of money.” he in Rossland. Valdy leaves for a tour of the Soviet Union later this year. said. “There, I bought a 12-string guitar and started playing in clubs and that’s when I became an entertainer. “Tt was “quite by accident,” he said. Since then, Valdy has played with Sheri Ulrich in the Hometown Band, then later peaked in popularity in the early 1970s with such hit songs as Rock and Roll Song and Yes I Can. He has had four gold albums and won two Juno awards. Now, finally established as one of Canada’s best known male vocalists, Valdy has become so recognizable he’s appeared as a guest panelist on Front Page Challenge. “At the end of the show, just as I was leaving, (columnist and author) Allan Fotheringham kind of winks and says, ‘You are now part-of the Canadian Institution.” Between tours, Valdy lives with his wife on Saltspring Island and occasionally goes to a small bar in Maple Bay near Duncan where he tries out his new tunes. “I treat Vancouver Island a little differently then everywhere else,” he said. “The accessibility of an audiénce for new material seems to be greater. “I know people have a hard time playing their own music in most bars across the country. Concerts are different of course, but in the bar situation, they want to hear top 40.” Nonetheless, in Valdy's very first performance in Rossland, he tried out four new songs on the capacity crowd and, if the way he was mobbed for autographs after the show is any barometer, they must have loved them. Valdy has an album, tentatively titled Benchmark for Craziness, in the works. I've taught industrial first aid for them for 19 years in the Revelstoke and Nakusp areas,” said Townsend. He added that he spent part of 1983 and 1984 travelling throughout B.C. teaching people industrial first aid and said he has noticed “a definite increase” in the number of people who are learning about industrial first aid. Dudley said people who are trained in first aid have fewer accidents “even at the home level” because they know what accidents can occur in certain situations. “St. John Ambulance stresses safety as well as first agreed to start at the local mittee, which will raise it with the regional forestry office. In related news, the board agreed to ask Premier Bill Vander -Zalm to re-evaluate past of reducing staff and closing government offices. Judge Bill Blair found pharmacist Raymond Gag- non, 35, of nearby Logan Lake guilty on one count of sexual assault but not guilty on a second count, saying the offence was not sufficiently proved. Gagnon will be sentenced Feb. 18. Defence lawyer Phil Maher had argued that if touching a woman's behind is sexual as- sault, then Turner, the fed- eral Liberal leader, could have been found guilty of the offence during the 1984 elec- tion campaign. When Turner patted then- party president Iona Cam- pagnolo’s behind during the campaign, she at least spoke out about the incident, Maher said, but the two teenaged girls who said Gagnon touch- ed their buttocks as they worked in his store, didn't say anything to Gagnon. The two girls did not ex- press “any grave concern or outrage about the circum- stances,” Maher said. BELATED HAPPY NEW YEAR Carrie McAllister WE GOTCHA!!! ber $20.7 million if fully taken up.
