Former News publisher and editor Burt Campbell was one of five Castlegar and area residents who received special recognition from Ottawa Wednesday for their outstanding service to a community. The special ceremony was conducted ™ aa News photo by Corinne Jackson Scott David Harrison EDITOR Lyle Kristiansen is a failure... at least, that’s what The Vancouver Sun believes. The Vancouver newspaper gave the long-serving Kootenay West-Revelstoke MP an ‘F’ during a recent round-up of B.C. politicians in Ottawa. “lye never attempted to be a media star and I won't,” Kristiansen said Thursday. “That’s just not my style.” The NDP MP dismissed the letter grade, saying it is not a true reflection of his commitment to his constituency. “Everyone is looking for politically sexy issues,” he said. “A lot of the work that I have been doing isn’t politically sexy and I guess that says it all.” Kristiansen said he won't judge his work in Ottawa on how many issues he brought up or argued. Instead, he said his work should be judged by what he has brought to his riding and the number of people he has helped during his terms in office. “My commitment has always been to the communities and individuals in the riding,” he said. “And as a rural MP there has been a lot of frustration. “I mean when you have a government that is hellbent on leather in seeing our rural post offices close down, you Kristiansen gets failing grade have to stand up and fight,” he said. “But even when these closures were unpopular with the people, the government still went ahead and did them. “Rural MPs have to put their communities first and I think I have done that,” Kristiansen said. Kristiansen wasn’t the only local MP to receive a failing grade. His East Kootenay counterpart Sid Parker also received an ‘F.’ Parker was also called an NDP “dinosaur.” “That really bothered me,” Kristiansen said. “He has really worked hard, not only for his constituency but for the entire province and country on all sorts of committees. They again, these aren’t politically sexy issues. Kristiansen received even more ink from the Ottawa- based Hill Times. The Parliament Hill publication referred to Kristiansen as a maverick. He said he collected that title after speaking out against the NDP proposal of gender-equity in its candidate selection. The NDP has yet to make the policy mandatory. “I don’t mind that one,” Kristiansen said, “but Tm not sure it is warranted. But, then again, I don’t think the (failing grade) was either.” Kristiansen has announced his retirement from politics. He has been replaced as the NDP candidate in Kootenay West-Revelstoke by Nelson’s Heather Suggit. RAL TAX RATES COULD JUMP 33 PER CENT, PAGE 3
