That figures are made to lie, and that facte must be preverted seem to be the task slotted the Rossland Miner. lies are innocent and harmless, but the falsehood that is told for the. purpose to mislead the mine owners of British Columbia, as to the cost of treating his ore, is inexcusable. To tell these peo- ple that they cannot expect to even have the products of their mines smelted for less than $9.73 a ton to. which must be added the eost of mining and trans- Pportaion, is telling them that nine- tenth of the property in this section is wholly worthless and that. the country is no good. Ifthe people can be made Gen to believe that, it can readily be seen. what a bad effect it would, have upon the camp. Capital that is tdrning this way would go elsewhere. It. is really too bad to have a newspaper published in. a community, which will: for the personal interests of its owner, distort the facts in reference to the. treatment | jy of the ores of its district. What the people of Rossland. wish to learn is, that it is possible to mine, haul and treat our low grade ores, and. in spite of the endeavor of the Miner to convince them tiat it cannot be done, they are still of the belief that it can. Marcus Daily,. superintendent of the Anaconda company’s mines - states that the c ost for transportation from Butte to Anscona, a distance of 25 miles; for the year ending. June 30, was only 153¢ cents @ ton, and:that: this year they hope to reduce that 1 per cent. Of course Mr. Heinze cannot be expected to haul ore even 18. miles s0 cheaply, because of the steep grade up| March 29, 1! -which must.be hauled the empty: care, but $2 per ton, the amount charged the Le Roi people is not a fair price to charge up against our low-grade ores. Strange as it may seem, the report which is catsing so much comment evade stating just what the cost. of treatment was, but Mr. Daily states, that 1,408,369 tons of ore were treated during the year and that a net profit of $5,136,048 was made, that a little over $3.90 a ton was made clear on less than $12 ore. Take from this the cost of the large amount of dead work, sinking shafts, ranning cross-cuts, which be says was done, the cost of mining and transportation, it brings the cost of treating the ore to less than $4 a@ ton. By these figures it can be seen that it is not impossible to treat our low grade ore at a profit. This makes a much more encouraging7outlook for a camp like Rossland, which has millions of tons of low grade ores.
