AMERICAN SPEAKERSHIP.’ For the first. time in the history of the United States there will be |" ‘no contest over the selection of a speaker of the house of representa- v tives, a position which the Hon. Thomas Brackett Reed said was second in importance and power only to that of the president. . xP we peed we! have ie your eyes, Ing to “s care ig interest. The enormous wealth’ contal in the timber reserves of Briti There has been many fights over the speakership in the > past, but never before has the mat-" ter been decided i in advance of. the meeting of the caucus of the domi-'| nant party. Y It was really an for Sdent. ‘lumbia is bey d the compret of man. The mighty pines and represént values that will go’ far to make ‘the province’ “the ‘richest ‘in the Dominion. In. its ‘grant When the announcement was made that Mr. Reed had decided to resign his seat in congress and en- gage in the practice of Jaw in New York, half a dozen gentlemen im- mediately entered the arena and opened up a vigorous canvass for his vacant chair. Among those who ‘figured in the early stages of the ‘speakership bat- tle in addition to Colonel Hender- son were James S. Sherman of New ‘York, Charles H. Grosvenor of Ohio, A. J. Hopkins of Illinois, J. Dalzell of Pittsburg and General Harry Bingham ol Philadelphia. At first Mr. Sherman was re- garded as the favorite. His friends argued | that Mr. Hopkins would divide the vote of the west with Colonel Henderson and that when “the critical moment arrived either .Henderson or Hopkins would throw ‘his strength to the New York man in order to defeat his immediate rival. Nothing , of the kind occurred, however. ‘Within a short time Hopkins, Grosvenor, Dalzell and Bingham dropped. out of the race and gracefully gave their support ‘to Henderson. This left Mr. Sherman’ as the only rival to the Iowa states- man. He struggled on manfully for a brief period, issuing bulletins saying that he intended to remain in the fight to the finish, and was confident of winning, but after it be- came evident that he could not hold the ‘delegation from his own state intact he yielded to the inevitable with as good a grace as possible and telegraphed his congratulations - to Colonel Henderson. All this of course took place sev- eral months ago,, and ‘from that time Colonel Henderson has been’ practically the speaker-slect of the Fifty-sixth congress. The republican caucus will meet on the Saturday night (December. 2) before the assembling of congress and go through the form ot*selec- ting a speaker, but it will only be a form, as Colonel Henderson will be the only candidate before the caucus. Having known for the past few months that he would, if he lived, be the next speaker, Colonel Hen- derson has undoubtedly given con- siderable attention to the composi- tion of the committees, which he is empowered to appoint. Ordinarily a new speaker is not able to ap- point his committees until just be- fore the holiday recess, but in the present . instance it is expected that Speaker, Henderson will have his slate made up and ready for publi- cation as soon‘as he takes the‘oath of office.
