OurPEOPLE Glen Freeman NEWS REPORTER Having gray hair is not a crime. In fact, in most countries senior citizens are revered and respected. That hasn’t been the case in Canada lately, so the B.C. Minister Responsible for Seniors, Elizabeth Cull, has made an announcement — Jun 1 to 7 is Seniors’ Week in British Columbia. 6 a _ “We wanted to make this a time to celebrate’ the contribution of the many individual seniors whom we have come to depend on for a helping hand, advice, kind words, leadership,” Cull stated in a recent news release. Worobey said she likes the idea of a week for seniors, as “we have a lot more to do than sit around stagnating.” And Worobey is far from stagnant. When Worobey left her job at Eatons 14 years ago, she started doing volunteer work with the hospital auxiliary “for something to do.” Today she she works at the auxiliary’s thrift shop once a week and helps out at the Mountain View Lodge twice a week. “I find it very rewarding,” Worobey said. “When you go and see those people and see how their faces ee up, well, it’s a really big In her spare time, when she has any, Worobey likes to garden. But, like many others, she feels that heaping praise on one person is misguided. “This isn’t about me,” she said. “There are a lot of senior citizens who do volunteer work. They all do a great job.” It’s up to the citizens of Castlegar to remember that fact. Not only during Seniors’ Week 1992, but every day of the*- year. Glen Freeman NEWS REPORTER The Royal Canadian Air Cadet No. 581 Castlegar Squadron turned 38 years old Wednesday. But you’d never know it by looking at them. _“We have a great bunch of kids. here,” said squadron chairman Robert Fullerton. “But when they turn 19 they have to leave the parade.” . As a part of the celebration, 24 young men and women polished their shoes, ironed their shirts, and strutted their stuff before Reviewing Officer Maj. P. Bey of Princeton. “It was an incredible success,” Fullerton said. “The people who came out said it was the best the cadets have looked all year, and the the guidance of Capt. Mike Power, are learning skills which will be of great value in the future. “Our program teaches kids to give orders and to take them,” Fullerton said. “It builds character and builds discipline. Being a cadet reinforces confidence, and that will help these kids to be better people.” However, being an air cadet isn’t just about discipline. It’s also about having a good time. “We have cadets that have received their gliding licenses, pilot’s licenses,” Fullerton said. “And the 24 cadets on parade Wednesday must like what they’re doing. “They all said they were coming back next year and that they’re bringing friends with them.” (Castlegar Air Cadets strut their stuff Tor 38 | ears reviewing party agreed.” Fullerton said that Castlegar’s air cadets, under Castlegar Hospital Auxiliary 3rd Mondays, 7:30 p.m. Hospital board room Brush and Palette Art Club If that’s the case, Castlegar’s May 2 - May 30 air cadets will have many more celebrations in the future.
