LOS ANGELES (AP) —
Television actors Gil Gerard
and Connie Sellecca have
filed for divorce.

Gérard, who appears in
ABC's Sidkicks, and Sellecca,
who appears in the network's
Hotel, filed petitions in Los
Angeles Superior Court. The
couple married Oct. 28, 1979,
and ‘separated in August
1985.

They have a five-year-old
son.

Monty Python star
not always funny

LOS ANGELES — The trouble with being a comic, says
Britain's John Cleese, is that people expect you to be funny
at all times.

“I simply can't do that,” said the star of the Monty
Python films. “If you give me a piece of material and let me
go off in a corner for a while, I can come back with something
laughable.

“But on most oecasions,.I'm about as funny as the
average bank clerk. I'm not at all like Robin Williams. I was
in a hotel room with bang when he ‘was doing his improvisa.

Despite his disclaimer, there are many people who
believe Cleese is the funniest man in the English-speaking
world, perhaps on all continents including Antarctica.

With his vacant stare, his tall ungainly frame and his
capacity for turning routine matters into major disasters, he
is a slimmed-down, latter-day Oliver Hardy

Even his official biography can't be taken seriously
Amid the chronology of his life are such entries as: “April
1976 — Monty Python stage show at City Centre, New York;
kissed by Leonard Bernstein.”

Cleese breezed into town to help celebrate the opening
of his new Universal comedy, Clockwise. His first film as solo
star, it is well tailored to his antic style.

He plays the self-made headmaster of an English school
with a mania for punctuality. The biggest day in his life
comes when he is invited to address a convention of head
masters. A few dozen funny things happen along the way

“At my age — I'll be 47 next month — it's not quite so
easy to do all that running around,” he remarked. “On the
first day I banged my right knee around in a confined space.
For the rest of the week I wasigetting out of a small car and
putting all the weight on the other knee. On the first day off,
Thad . . . fluid on the right knee. So I spent the entire day off
in my hotel room putting packets of frozen peas on it to
reduce the swelling.

“I bound it up, and the next morning I was supposed to
be running around in the train station. At a half past 31 tore
my left hamstring. With seven weeks of shooting to go, I had
the body of a 79-year-old man, with still a lot of capering
around to do.”

DISLIKES WORK

He expands on his ambitions: “If I liked acting at all —
which I don't I would like to do something that doesn't
involve a lot of running around. I like sitting in the garden
reading books. I like having lunch with friends. I like going
to the movies — much more than I like making them. I like
going to the theatre, I like travelling. I like almost anything
that isn't work.”

Born a month after the Second World War started, John
Cleese was a smalltown boy who went to Cambridge.

“I was going to be a lawyer, but then I appeared in a
show, the Cambridge Footlights,” he recalled.

“The next thing I knew there were two very nice people
from the BBC who said, “Would you like to come and have a
job with us?” They were offering me 2'/ times as I would get
as a lawyer, and I never wanted to be a lawyer anyway.”

“I was able to tell my parents it was the BBC and I
would get a pension, so it was all right with them.”

Woman does fire stunts

EDMONTON — The fire caught the bottom of the prom
queen's crinoline blue dress. Within seconds, she was en
gulfed in flames.

Her face contorted in agony as she dropped to her
knees, then pitched forward to the floor of the gymnasium
stage. Behind her, a horrified young couple gaped
soundless screams.

An hour later, her burned dress replaced by blue jeans
and a T-shirt, stuntwoman Leslie Munro sipped a soft drink
and relaxed.

“I think I got a little bit of a singe there,” she said,
brushing back her straight blond hair to touch an unmarked
cheek. “I felt the heat flash.”

The Haunting of Hamilton High, a $2-million teen horror
movie shot in Edmonton, marked Munro's first full-fire
stunt.

“T've done partials, like an arm or leg, but never when
you're totally engulfed,” the Toronto native said with a

hadn't done it to this extent. It's quite a sensation.”

QUEEN KILLED

The plot of Hamilton High is standard fare — a prom
queen is killed in a tragic accident and comes back 30 years
later to unleash mayhem on her old high school and possess
an innocent young girl

“It's a very intelligent film,” suggested Ray Sager
supervising producer for Toronto's Simeom Ltd. “It's very
close to a horror version of Back to the Future.”

But as was evident during the filming of Munro's stunt
the real showpieces of the movie are its special effects.

It took more than three hours for the film crew to
prepare for the shot. Munro was put into a fireproof body
suit which covered everything but her face. Over that went
the dress and a wig.

Assistants brushed contact cement and sprayed
inflammable fluid on Munro so the burn would be quick and
dramatic

Concentration was intense. Twice an assistant director
barked at a chattering group of young extras.

Munro took her position and did the stunt. A horrible

stench from the burned contact cement filled the hot, stuffy
gymnasium

A safety crew extinguished the flames and spent
several minutes checking through the layers of Munro's
dress — while she lay prone — for any smouldering material
that might re-ignite. *

As Munro rose from the stage, the 100 or so boisterious
young extras burst into applause.

“It's not frightening.” said Munro, who has been a
stuntwoman for six years and has worked in such films as
The Dead Zone, Police Academy and the recent remake of
The Fly

“You can hear yourself go ‘whuff,” but you still don’t
know if you're on fire because you can't see it. Around the
twelfth or thirteenth second, that's when you start feeling it
on the pressure points on your body.”

STRESSFULL JOB

Munro's boss, stunt co-ordinator Dwayne McLean, said
the psychological challenge is the most difficult part of the
job

“The stunt is on your mind for a week or so,” said
McLean, a tall, powerfully built man. “You go through your
list of what you're going to do, and you have to go over it and
After a while it gets tedious, but you have to do it
because you don't know exactly what's going to happen.”

His own job, as the man ultimately responsible for the
stunt, is equally nerve racking.

McClean said no stunt is completely safe

“My philosophy is that we don't get paid for the nice
cushy landings, we get paid for the day we miss,” he said.
“You just try to reduce the percentage of risk as much as
you can

McLean prefers to work on movies like Hamilton High
rather than big budget films

Low budget films are really nice to work on,” he said
“They need that action so they're more concerned about it,
so we get more co operation. I've done some great stunts on
lousy pictures.”

TORONTO (CP) — Gene Simon decided to open her
own toy store after a fruitless shopping trip for a kite.

That was 11 years ago and Simon says an initial
$6,000 investment, borrowed from her father, has pro-
duced a business worth many times more, with two
full-time and three part-time employees.

Simon's store, The Toy Circus, is a small business
success story.

Last year, 300,000 new business were registered in
Canada, nearly a third of them in Ontario, says the
Canadian Fed of Ind

The average investment for people starting a small
business was $11,000 to $12,000, says George More,
manager of small business advice and counsellor for the
provincial Ministry of Industry, Trade and Technology.

“Over the past 10 years new businesses have created
the overwhelming majority of new jobs in Ontario,” More
said, adding that statistics show a third of small
businesses close within five years of opening.

“If you survive three years your chances of success
improve considerably,” says chartered accountant Joseph
Uyede.

The biggest cause of failure is bad management and
lack of working capital, says Uyede, a partner in Touche
Ross and Co.

ASK QUESTIONS

He says the management process begins when
people ask themselves why they want to be in business on
their own.

Experts say bad management includes:

e@ Overestimating sales and underestimating ex-
penses so there isn't enough money to pay the bills while
waiting for payments. New owners should “assume
everything is going to go wrong, and not count on the
banks to bail them out,” says John Nestor of John Nestor
and Associates Ltd.

e Over-optimism. “Too often budding entrepreneurs
are so convinced of their product they say the world is
going to love it,” says Brien Gray, vice-president and
general manager of the Canadian Federation of In
dependent Business.

Producing the wrong product, for which there is no
market, or being in the wrong location.

e Personality. Being an entrepreneur means being a
risk-taker.

Long hours, lack of family support, no experience.

@ Lack of critical advice. “If you spend $100,000 to go
into business you should spend $5,000 on advice,” says
Nestor.

e Lack of expertise. It's important to have a
chartered accountant, a lawyer and a banker, says
Uyede. They're the management team until the business
can hire more people.

Paul Martin, the Royal Bank's manager of market

and independent bi in Ontario, says a
detailed business plan is for potential owners. It should
include expected income, expenses, cash flow, com
petition and expectations.

The bank will need it to decide whether to grant a
loan. But more important, it should tell the owner
whether the business is viable, says Martin.

Prairie family firm

WINNIPEG — George Richardson looked out the over-
sized 30th-floor windows of the downtown Winnipeg office
building that bears his family name, proudly surveying the

But Richardson, head of James Richardson and Sons
Ltd., has more than a native-born love of Winnipeg.

It’s also the heart of the empire the Richardson family
has built to include interests in grain, real estate, pipeline
and highway construction and Richardson Greenshields of
Canada Ltd., one of the last family-owned securities firms in
Canada.

It's the latter that has received the bulk of attention
recently, from an earlier this
month that the company will transfer 29 employees —
ineluding 10 vice-presidents — to Toronto and lay off an
additional 48 workers in Winnipeg.

The transfers come mainly from sales, management,
marketing, investment management, research and account-
ing. The layoffs consist mostly of clerical staff and 25 per
cent of them will be offered positions in other Richardson
companies.

A company said the reor will put
the firm in a better position to serve its clients and compete
with other Canadian and U.S. securities firms.

SPARKS RUMORS

The move in turn pi pted rumors that
Greenshields might be moving its headquarters-to- Ontario,
following a growing number of large Winnipeg companies
that have shifted executives either east or to the United
States since 1979.

But Richardson, a 62-year-old nattily dressed executive,
was quick to dispel any thought of transferring the head
office to Toronto's Bay Street.

“This is just a division of James Richardson and Sons
Ltd. and James Richardson and Sons Ltd.'s main office is
here,” he said. “You don’t move the head office of a division
out. The operation, yes, but the head office, no.”

Richardson, who has been with the parent company for
40 years, said he considers Winnipeg the logical place to
keep his staff, partly because of its central location in the
country and partly because the parent company's largest
Canadian concern remains in the grain industry.

With roots tracing back to the establishment of the
parent company in 1857 and Richardson Securities — as the
securities branch was first known — in 1927,
Richardson is ready to take on new ideas and ventures.

He said a proposal by the Ontario government to open
that province's securities industry to foreign investors and
domestic banks and trust ies is “quite and

CREATES BLUEPRINT
Richardson, well known for his free enterprise beliefs,
has few qualms about the Ontario government plan, sche-

duled to come into force in the new year and expected to act

as a blueprint across Canada.

“It's allowed big American firms to come in and it's
allowing banks and other financial institutions to participate
in the industry,” he said.

“It's changing the industry, but we're not unduly
alarmed by it. It's just one of those things that comes along
when it’s time for a change. I think it’s timely that chafiiges
be made.”

Richardson Greensheilds will also soon be offering up to
25 per cent of the company to ‘some of its employess, with

“It is a business that employs and excites entrepre
neurial type people,” he said. “They like equity in what

they're doing and we want to be accommodating in that
way.”

Richardson said that although other companies have
offered a share plan to employees,

Toronto Stock Exchange
made good gains with the
golds and paper and forest
products subgroups leading
the way in generally mod
erate trading this week.

The TSE composite index
was up 31.1 points to close at
3069.99 for the week. It
dropped .79 in active trading

On Wall Street, the Dow
Jones industrial average
dropped 5.06 points to
1886.53, cutting its gain for
the week to 8.72 points. The
drop on Friday came as
interest rates rose in the
credit markets.

On Bay Street, analysts
said the lack of movement on
Friday shows the market is
still uncertain about the
direction of the economy and
interest rates.

Eleven of 14 subgroups
were up for the week with

Industrial products led the

decliners, dropped 2.72 per
cent.
