Abbott was among some 60 participants in the Rick Han- sen Man-In-Motion Ski-A- Thon last weekend at Silver Star Mountain near here. Like Hansen, Abbott is a paraplegic. She was paraly- sed in a skiing accident in December 1983 at Silver Star. The return to the Okan- agan Valley ski resort was | her first since the mishap. “I've skied several times before, so I'm not really ner- vous about skiing,” she said. “But I was nervous about re. turning to Silver Star. It felt strange when I arrived.” Ski-A-Thon participants collected pledges for every run they made and the pro- ceeds went to Hansen's Man- In-Motion world tour. One of the participants was blind skier Matt Salli of Ver- non, who completed 20 runs and raised $230. Hansen is currently wheel: ing through Saskatchewan on his way to a finish in Van couver, which he departed almost two years ago on his around-the-world wheelchair trek to raise money for spinal cord research and make the public aware of the disabled’s capabilities. Organizers of the Silver Star event set a goal of $10,000 and surpassed it by raising $10,104 USED SIT-SKI Abbott made her runs on a sit-ski, which is similar to a toboggan. The skier is closer to the snow and turns are made with the aid of modified ski poles. A skier with a safe ty line accompanied her on queen from near by Enderby prior to her accident. Like Hansen, she has refused to let her handicap slow her down. She won five swim- ming medals, including three gold, in the Pan-American Games for the Disabled last November in Puerto Rico. “I really admire Rick,” she Past Fireside Motel Sunday School 10:00 a.m. Morning Worship :00.a.m Evening Service 6:30 p.m TUES. 6:00 P.M.
