Simple cheque safety urged

Personal cheques are one of the
most frequently used methods to pay
bills, but bank officials warn they can
also make easy pickings for fraud ar-
tists, .

Forging a signature on a cheque can
be simple for a thief, especially if can-
celled cheques. — which contain a
signature — are carelessly left for
them to copy.

“People sometimes treat these
things very casually and they think:
‘It's only a bank account,’ ” says
Jean Harris, the Montreal-based
manager of consumer affairs for the
Royal Bank of Canada.

“*But bank accounts are still an im-
portant thing to look after. After all,
it is your money.”’

Should things go wrong, all is not
lost. Banks generally make refunds if

Still, it’s better to avoid the
problem in the first place by heeding
some simple rules:

* Don’t make cheques out to cash
or bearer. If you lose the cheque on
the way to the bank, anyone can pick
it up and cash it, Harris says.

““We have to honor it if it comes in
written out to bearer or cash and
signed on the ack by. somebody
showing quite acceptable iden-
tification . .. Who are we to know?””

Make cheques payable to the bank
if transferring money between banks,
Harris suggests. Make it out to your-
self if switching money from one ac-
count to another.

“Don’t be casual about that,”
Harris says. ‘‘Don’t leave yourself
open to fraud.””

Many office managers circulate oc-
casional memos _to-staff—reminding
them to guard their purses and wallets
against potential thieves wandering
through the office.

Cheques should be handled the
same way as the wallets, Harris
suggests. Keep them away from the
prying eyes — and hands — of others.
