Ithough it may be sacreli-
gious to suggest such a
thing, Garry Shandling’s new
late-night “mock” show is a
parody on a par with SCTV’s
“The Sammy Maudlin Show”
and, yes, maybe even Norman
Lear’s “Fernwood 2-Night.”
Like the other great talk-
show spoofs that have gone be-
fore it, “The Larry Sanders
Show” blurs the line between

reality and fantasy. If not for
the occasional, behind-the-cur-
tain look at the egos and syco-
phants who work on the pro-

gram, it could almost be the
real thing.

Shandling couldn’t be better
as Larry Sanders, an obsequi-
ous TV talk-show host who
does the standard “Tonight
Show” thing, complete with
desk and guest couch. Doing
cameos of themselves as
guests are stars such as Carol
Burnett. In the second episode,
she was chummy as could be
with Larry while on the air,
but as soon as the show cut toa
commercial, the two were cool
as ice. During the break, she
kept glancing at her watch,
but, when the cameras were
once again turned on, the two
traded insincere compliments.

The phony on-air amiability
is one of the great strengths of
the show, but it takes things
one step further by venturing
backstage to spoof the hypoc-
risies and fragile egos that ex-
ist off camera. Rip Torn plays
Larry’s savvy, show-biz-hard-
ened producer, Arthur, who
lives for “huge laughs, huge.”
Jeffrey Tambor is Larry’s in-
secure, Ed McMahon-type
sidekick, Hank.
