Phyllis Gairns, a clinical social worker with the Ministry of Health, spoke to the Castlegar Rotary Club recently on the topic of the mental disorder known as schizophrenia. Its course, she said, is still uncertain but there are numerous theories. However, its prognosis and history are well known. Affecting one in every 100 people, it is a chronic and disabling disease — or group of dis- eases — affecting brian function and chemistry so that the thoughts, feelings and actions of its victims are not co-ordinated, and affects every aspect of the personality, but is not generally dangerous. The name itself, schizophrenia — which means split personality’— is incorrect and has led to many misconceptions. These misconcep- tions are sometimes fatal, especially in the se- vere cases when exaggerated and loudly ex- pressed opinions, delusions of persecution, ref- erence (voices), hallucinations of the five sens- es and sudden mood changes promoted vio- lence and sometimes burning at the stake as witches. For many years there was no known cure for the disease and the majority of patients con- fined to mental hospitals were schizophrenics. About the middle of this century, drugs were discovered which could control the disease and the mental hospital population dropped dra- matically. There is a strong hereditary disposition to demonstrate the disease but it can be kept in check by the use or drugs and most patients, therefore, can lead normal functioning lives. The greatest barriers to success, Gairns con- cluded are guilt, fear, ignorance and denial on the part of the patient and those about him. There are many day and outreach programs for the patient and family and the very real pos- sibility of a cure early in early 2000 and the ministry workers are available to help for the asking, she said.
