HORSWILL HEADS CANCER SOCIETY On Thursday night last, the Castlegar and District Unit of Canadian Cancer Society was formed at a special meeting in the Parish hall. Sherbico.~ = CASTLEGAR BRIDGE TO THE FORE The Castlegar bridge is mak- ing the headlines this week with reports from Victoria indicating its consideration. E. T. Kenney gave the House a two-hour re- port of the work of his public works department and its plans “for the coming year. He said he is seriously con- sidering a new $1,000,00 bridge at Castlegar to replace the busi- est of B. C’s 54 ferries. In Creston, the annual meeting of the Associated Boards of Trade called for ‘prompt and earnest consideration to early elmina- tion of farries and with top prior- ity; being given to construction of & bridge across Columbia Riv- er on the existing No. 3 highway at :Castlegar. The Castlegar Bridge Commit- tee, under the guidance of Ross McDermid, will meet in the Twin Rivers hall'on Friday evening to discuss further plans on the bridge compaign. _TOWN PLANNING ‘BOARD ORGANIZED The first meeting of the Town Planning Board voiced a unani- mous decision on the opening of Pine Street in the business - section. Davis A well known resident of Castlegar, Leonard Wiliam Davis, passed away in Trail-Tad- -anac hospital Thursday, March 6, after a lengthy illness. Born August 11, 1914, he lived at Riondel until taking employ- ment at Trail in 1934. He was a member of Enter- prise Lodge No. 43, I.0.0.F., and the Canadian Legion “andsaw~ ‘three years service with the R.C.A.F. in World War II. Mrs. A. was ed delegate to the meeting to be held in Vancouver on March 17 and 18. SOMMERS AGAIN ELECTED PRESIDENT OF K. R. C. The regular monthly meeting of the Board of Directors of the Kinnaird, Robson, Castlegar Wel- fare and Recreational Society, called for February 26, 1952, had to be postponed for one week due to insufficient number of members turning out far the meeting. The postponed meet- ing was held on March 4th. Election of officers was held with H. Sommers being returned as president, E. S. Martin, vice- president and J. Dalziel con- tinuing as secretary-treasurer. Mr. E. A. Fitzpatrick, new member for Kinnaird, told the meeting that he had spoken to Officials of W. K. P. and L. Co. re financial support for the so- ciety, with encouraging results. Adl society correspondence with that company should be address- ed to D. McMynn. The following grants were au- thorized: $300 to the Lillian Kil- lough Chapter, 1.0.D.E., for wel- fare work. $150 to,Camp Lourd- es, this to be assistance to the camp for 1951 and ’52. T $100 to Conquer Cancer Cam- paign, B. C. Division. A letter from the Castlegar and District-Projects Society was read saying that they had inad- vertantly called their annual meeting for the last Tuesday’ in March which would conflict with the next monthly meeting of the Board of Directors of the K. R. S. and asked if the board would please advance the date of their meeting one week. This received the okay of the board. The society will operate during 1952 under the same budget set up for 1951. The following organizations will be added to the list of Na- tional Charities to be supported by the K. R. C. during 1952. Victorian Order of Nurses, B. Cc. Tuberculosis Society, Crippled Children’s Hospital, B. C., Queen Alexandria Solarium, Canadian 4rthritis and Rheumatism So- ciety, Trail Branch. MRS. MAGEE TO ATTEND 1.0. D. E. CONVENTION The Lillian Killough Chapter I.0.D.E. met on Monday night in the Twin Rivers hall with 28 members in. attendance and the Regent, Mrs. D. Magee in the chair. A new member, Mrs. R. Graham, was welcomed into the chapter. Letters were received from the Bridge Committee, the Students’ Council, the K.R.C. and also one from Mrs, Pellant, the provincial president, who visited here recently. Mrs. Magee was appointed as delegate to the Provincial I. O. D. E.. convention in Vancouver in April. Mrs. J. Mrs. Petts referred to the distinction received by the contractors of the Stanley Hum- phries .high school in winning honorable mention in an interna- tional ‘contest for their design and .plans... He had been a resident of Castle- gar for the past 12 years where he was well known as a lover of gardening and an_ enthusiastic photographer. He is survevied by his wife, Helen Mae, and one son, Peter at Castlegar; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. G. Davis of Riondel; one brother Henry of Blubber Bay, B. C., and two sisters, Mrs, Char- lie King of Castlegar and Mrs. K. Price of Cranbrook. Rev. L. C. Johnston conducted the funeral service in the United Church on Sunday afternoon and the congregation sang the 23rd Psalm. Organist was Mrs. J. W. Thatcher and Mr. William Easton ushered. : Pallbearers were E. J. Lipsett, C. Petts, J. T. Dunlop, C. H. King, R. Gemmill and J. D. Smith. Hesketh agreed to take charge of the flower girls. The float committee consists of Mrs.-Ross Whittaker, Mrs. M. Dalton, -Mrs. -H. Sommers, Mrs. ForgieThomson and Mrs. R., - Graham.
