CASTLEGAR NEW, Thursday, July 24, 1975 Notes from the Golf Course Co-Operation Needed to Obtain Proper Results for Wednesday Men's Nights Golf By John Dalziel ‘This week we will have a little chat about aprons. No, we are not thinking of awitching over and becoming a home- maker's column, though it may sound like thatt For the uninitiated, an apron in golf lingois a border of from three to 10 feet wide surrounding the putting sur- face of the greens. For a number of years there has been some agitation In favor of establishing aprons around our greens and this seazon this has been done, possibly as a result of the B.C. Junior Open being held here, ‘Aprons are one of the real amenities of a golf course and should be appreciated. The, seml-cropped areas of the aprons often mean the differ. birdie and a par being abused by unthinking and careless golfers pulling their carts across and around them, ‘This is atrictly verboten since the apron should be considered as part of the green. Unfortunately, the evidence is unmistakable since the tracks are there for all to see. It won't “take too much of this sort of or, in my case, between’a double and a triple bogey. However, they are already CASTLEGAR NEWS Tennis Club News © - Closed Tourney Aug. 16817 By Lori Friesan Once again I have good news to report in the results of a tournament. Last week—on July 14, 15 and 16—Trail held its Juntor Open Tournament with very competitive players showing up from Prince George, Vietoria, One for Read Often Means One Too Many How often does “one for thé road" mean the same thing as “one too many” “for a motorist The B. He took the 16 and under singles and the 18 and under singles when he defeated Ken Bjorgaard of Prince George 4-6, 6-2, 6-0. Well done! Nelson had scheduled their junior tournament for July 17, 18 and 19 but it was postponed for two or three weeks because of bad weather conditions. We ‘wish all our junior participants the best of luck in that tournament. Our Castlegar Closed ‘Tournament is scheduled for ‘Aug. 16 and 17 with men’s and Indies singles, men's and d doubles. The weather was perfect and the competition was keen so a good time was had by all, especially the ball winners. My putter was red hot and Thad only 12 putts for the nine holes. This was good, but not good énough to finish in firat place with my partner Art: Hawkins. Top spot was won by the team of Ernle Carkner and Joe Schiavon, although how they managed that I can't say since they did not: play to- gether, at least when Ernie and his wife’ followed our match. Over the many years of service Mike gave to the club Helen was a familiar . figure on the course and in the pro shop. She was keenly interested in what was going on: and knew most of the golfers by name. Since the formation of the seniors group it had a special place in her regard’ and she never failed to ask about the welfare of,the boys when I had cceasion to phone or call at the Verauh home. ‘The thoughts and warmest sympathies of all golfers and especially the seniors go out to Mike, Nikki and Ron in .this, their, hour of’ sorrow and bereavement.
