PRINCE GEORGE, B.C. (CP) — For a year, Murielle
Sandburg, 52, has been looking forward to returning here to
be near her family, but her dream was shattered by a
decision of the Human Resources Ministry

Under the ministry's plan to close Tranquille Institution

Sandburg is one of 56 mentally handicapped
mstieats being transferred to Glendale Lodge in Victoria.

Officials from Prince George's Aim Hi (Asscociation for
Individuals with Mental Handicaps) say the decision is
frustrating, because they've specifically renovated a group
home at a cost of $23,500, mainly for her.

Aim Hi president Doug Walls said the money
provided and approved by the provincial and federal
governments — has been used to widendoors and hallways,
build ramps and construct a private suite with a bathroom
designed with raised tub, toilet and wheelchair-height
fixture for easier handling of Sandburg in the $86,000,
148-equare-metre group home.

In addition, sliding doors, a low window and an intercom
system were installed to accommodate her needs.

Kitehen and hall carpet was replaced with tile flooring
for easier rolling of the wheelchair

Special staff, including one with nursing bacground and
a group home supervisor, were hired mainly to care for
Sandburg, but will be kept to operate the home.

When the Tranquille closure was announced, Human
Resources Minister Grace McCarthy promised that all
patients would be placed in their home communities. But
Sandburg has been labelled as an extended-care patient and
is not eligible for replacement in a group home, said Walls.

When closure notice of the Kamloops insitute was
given, Aim Hi was asked to proyide homes for the 19
returning clients.

“We got a list of those concerned, learned about their
handicaps and needs and began making plans for group
homes, staff and programs to deal with special needs,” said
Walls.
