The Capitol Theatre in Nelson plans a special performance series this year which includes an appearance by musical satirist Nancy White. White in Nelson Nov. 30 There is a bigger cultural banquet in Nelson this season. For the classical music fans there are Over- ture Concerts. For children there is the new Kids’ Concert Series. And for those who have hoped for a wider range of adult entertain- ment, the Capitol Theatre is spon soring a performance series too. The first presentation on Nov. 2 is the Vancduver Opera Ensemble's An Evening at the Opera. The first act is a capsule version of The Barber of Seville and the second act features favorite opera and Broadway hits. On Nov. 30, Nelson can see Nancy White in sparkling action again. She delighted a packed audience a couple of years ago with her music and satire, and she promises to do it again. The Bulava Dance Theatre comes Feb. 7 to the Capitol. Happy Birthday, Junior! To wind up the season on March 19, from Hamilton Aquarius Theatre comes McClure. Dr. Robert McClure ought to be as celebrated as Norman Bethune. His 25 years as a medical missionary in China are portrayed in the one-man show, based on a bio- graphy by Munroe Scott. The real McClure toured in Nelson several years ago, and if the portrait of this adventuring doctor is anything like the man himself, the musical show promises to be power- ful as well as entertaining. Piscopo credits Lewis LOS ANGELES (AP) — Joe Pis vopo's beginnings on the comedy trail may well have started when his father took him to see Jerry Lewis in The Nutty Professor. “I remember the theatre, the seat, everything,” he says. “Boy, I just thought that it was the greatest_movie—ever—_made-It-may very well have been; I still feel that way when I watch it on videotape. “I remember me and my dad and my brother watching the movie and seeing Jerry go into his character which I'm sure influenced me in later comedy years,” said Piscopo as he did a Lewis imitation. “Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant. Jerry directed that, too.” His latest movie is Dead Heat, in which he and Treat Williams. do battle with a gang of thugs who won't die. You might think that the intense Williams and the loose Piscopo would make an incongruous couple both on and off the screen. “Treat was great,” the comedian said. “Treat’s got as sick a sense of humor as I do, and it was wild. Be. tween takes and everything, we had a great time. MADE FRIENDS “For some reason we both did silly things — like Jerry Lewis RESTAURANT ATTENTION: Colander Customers We are continuing to revitalize. Thank you for your continued cooperation. For reservations Phone 364-2616. THE COLANDER impressions throughout the movie. When we got punchy, we started doing Jerry back and forth; it kept us going. It's very important to be on the same wave length on a picture like this.” Piscopo observed that fellow grad. uates of Saturday Night Live follow twe—courses—in—their—film—careers: they either arrive with a bang such as the late John Belushi and come- dian Eddie Murphy; or, they have a slow buildup to the top such as Dan Aykroyd and Chevy Chase. Piscopo figures he’s in the latter category. Piscopo's comedy career began when he started performing at the Improvisation in New York. The Saturday: Night Live pro- ducers liked his stuff and signed him in 1980. “It was pretty devastating,” Pis- copo recalled. “I had been doing very well at the Improv and with tele- vision commercials. On Saturday Night Live we had to replace Bill Murray and Danny Aykroyd and Gil- da Radner, and it was an impossible task. The show in its first year was an abomination, real bad. GOT EXCITED “Then it started to get exciting, when I realized we were doing stuff that was good as ever.” The turning point may have come at a cast meeting when a producer with spray paint emblazoned “Dan- ger” on a blank wall. Piscopo fol- lowed the instruction, stretching his own talent, and sometimes good taste, to the utmost. He has portrayed so many char- acters that you wonder if the real Joe Piscopo will ever stand out. He ad. mitted that such portrayals may con- stitute a device: “Not liking one’s self, being insecure. It’s true. I feel the most comfortable doing charac. ters, like in the beer commercials. “I liked Dead Heat because I was myself for the first time,” he said. “And I found myself feeling com- fortable. Lately I've been working out and staying physically fit, and I feel more confidence with myself.” Seeing him portray the late mar- tial arts king Bruce Lee in the com mercials, you might think he’s wearing a body suit. Those muscles are all Piscopo's “A lot of people thought I was wearing prosthetics,” he said. “I've been working for 2' years. I do it for my head. The muscles are a resi- dual result. “I want to do it for three or four more years, and then I'll just be one of those guys who swims every day.” Treatment ordered AUGUSTA, GA. (AP) — Soul singer James Brown has been or dered to undergo treatment for drug and alcohol abuse, and prohibited from driving while traffic charges against him are pending. Judge Carl Brown of municipal court imposed those conditions Tues- day as he granted a motion filed by the singer's lawyers seeking a jury trial in Richmond County State Court. The entertainer's case had been assigned to municipal court, which does not have jury trials. Brown, on tour in Europe, did not attend the hearing. The singer was charged last month with driving under the influence, driving with a suspended licence and improper movement on the roadway. The arrest was the latest in a string of run-ins with the law Brown has had this year. A trial has not been scheduled. | ENTERTAINMENT », October 19, 1988 Castlégar News Lcd Northwest Passage. missing and other Pierre Berton's latest book has had a lot of promotion recently to doesn't need much from this column! It was 30 years ago when they started working together, when Car- son was host of a game show called Who Do You Trust? and McMahon was hired to be the announcer. “Our relationship was established the very first day,” McMahon re- called. “I introduced the show, then I brought him the list of questions. He jumped and said, ‘Lothar, you startled me!"” Lothar was the faithful sidekick to Mandrake the Magician in the news- paper comic strip. “That set our relationship. Lots of humor and kidding.
