NO.1 IN THE RUN LocdSSPORTS Rebels romp in weekend wins over Nite Hawks NEWS STAFF The Castlegar Rebels went hunting last weekend and brought home a sack full of Nite Hawks. Playing their first exhibition games of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League season, Castlegar and Beaver Valley met in Beaver Valley Friday and again in Castlegar the next night. : After the dust had cleared and the bodies carried from the battlefield, the Rebels had come away with wins of 4-0 Friday and 7-1 Saturday. Friday’s contest was a rough one, taking over three hours to play and Rebels coach Gary Sauer said his squad never really established a rhythm. “The kids didn’t get the greatest workout because of all the stoppages in play,” he said. Sauer said the Rebels came out to skate, while the Nite Hawks had other ideas. “It was a fast pace to start’ and it just died off,” he said. “We ended up playing their type of game because (the ref) wasn't calling penalties.” The visitors toughed it out, as Kevin Leiman, Craig Swanson, Jerry Holz and Jef Evdokimoff scored while netminders Kyle Isberg and Joel Audet shared the shutout. Saturday’s rematch was a different story, though, as the Rebels came out skating again and kept it going. “The first period had a nice flow to it,” Sauer said. “Good skating, the guys were hitting.” Swanson paced.-the locals with three goals, Mark Graf had a pair while Cory Ross and Shane Cutler added singles. Johnny Rae and Jacey Moore could have read a good book while in net, as the Rebels out shot the Nite Hawks by a wide margin, including 37-10 over the first two periods. Sauer said “We’re pretty well three- quarters of the way there” toward picking a team, and said “by the end of the week we should be down to our team.” In other weekend action, Golden took a pair of games from Columbia Valley, 7-6 and 7-1. Results of the Castlegar-Rossland game last night were unavailable at press Dynamos -lose cool, players, game Jonathan Green SPORTS REPORTER The Dexter’s Dynamos played even soccer for over 60 minutes with the top team in the West Kootenay Men’s Soccer League last weekend. Unfortunately for the Dynamos, soc- cer games are 90 minutes long. Facing league-leading Nelson Savoy at Ki- wanis Park Sunday, the Dynamos gave the visitors a fight well into the second half tied at two. But the hosts ran into some discipline prob- lems soon after and, by game’s end, they'd lost three players to ejections and the game, 6-2. Dynamos coach Ed Chaves said things looked to be going well for his squad until they ran into trouble. “Then we got a couple red cards and it was game over right away,” he said. “I was very happy until those stupid red cards.” Kevin Chaves opened the scoring for the about 10 minutes into the game, but Savoy replied with two of their own thanks to some disastrous Dynamos defence. “They should never have scored,” Ed Chaves said. Ed Quintanilha evened things up for Dex- ter’s just before halftime, and it stayed that way until Quintanilha and Paul Costa were ejected within minutes of each other in the sec- ond half. Savoy capitalized with the two-man advan- tage, scoring four straight goals. Ed Chaves said the effort his team had put forward until that point was wasted. “After that I was pissed off and gave up,” News photo by Jonathan Green Dexter's Dynamos’ Joe Pacheco (4) and Louis Costa give chase to a Nelson Savoy player during last Sunday’s match. Super Sunday less than super for Kats as they lose to Mates Wi Bulldogs remain undefeated with win over Hawks in TFFL action NEWS STAFF The Trail Flag Football League held its annual league day Sunday, and a Dam Inn Mates’ star couldn’t have picked a better time to shine. Dom Droucker led his squad on every side of the ball, scoring four touchdowns on of- fence, picking off an important pass on defence and recover- ing his own punt on special teams as the Mates beat the Castlegar Tom Kats 44-30 on Super Sunday at Trail’s Haley Park. Mates’ Dave Loukianow said Droucker did everything for the team and more. “No matter what, we got the ball to him, he said.“ It was the game of his career.” The Kats looked to be in control of the game in the sec- ond quarter, leading 16-6 when Droucker went to work. Deep in Mates’ territory, Kats quaterback Gord San- drin dropped back and threw into the endzone, only to see the ball end up in Droucker’s hands. The Mates were unable to convert the turnover and were TRAIL FLAG FOOTBALL LEAGUE (As of Sept. 23) Bulldogs 3 0 66 Mates 2 1 71 Kats 12°79 Hawks 0 3 40 forced to punt. Droucker struck again on the kick, racing downfield to pick up his own punt and the Mates scored shortly after to close the gap to 16-12. “You could say that punt was a big one for us,” Loukianow said. Things went from bad to worse for the Kats as the Mates scored 32 of the next 46 points on their way to the vic- tory. Ian McMillan scored two touchdowns for the winners, while Paul Hoodicof added one. Neil Bermel picked up a pair of majors for the Kats, while Roger Junker and Richard Coyle added singles. In the league’s other match- up, the Trail Bulldogs stayed undefeated in top spot as they handed cross-town rival Hawks their third straight loss, 19-7. In between games, players from all four teams put their football skills to the test in a running, kicking and passing competition. Brent Bath of the Bulldogs took top honors as the league’s fastest man, teammmate Ed Canzian won the kicking con- test with a 72-yard boot and Duane Donald of the Mates captured the TFFL’s most ac- curate passer award. The Hawks will look for re- venge and their first win against the Bulldogs Saturday at 11 a.m., while the Kats tackle the Mates at Mt. Sen- tinel at 2 p.m. The Hawks come to Castle- gar to play the Kats at 11 a.m. Sunday at Kinnaird Middle School, while the Mates head down Highway 3 to face the Bulldogs in Trail at 2 p.m. he said. “We should have won that game for sure.” The Dynamos’ Joe Pacheco was ejected just before game’s end and will face suspension af- ter receiving a second red card for contacting the referee. Savoy coach Barry Martin said he liked what he saw from Dexter's, that was until the rough stuff began. “T was impressed until they started hack- ing,” he said. “If the Dynamos could keep their cool, they’d have a pretty good team.” Putting the match with Dexter’s behind them, Martin said Savoy is looking forward to its next contest with the Castlegar Devils at home Sunday. He said that the size of Lakeside Park’s field in Nelson lets them run more than the smaller field at the Community Complex did. “We like the big space,” he said. “It suits us very well.” In other league action, the Devils were 1-0 forfeit winners in Trail, Nakusp stayed even with the Devils with a 5-0 home victory against Rossland and Nelson Heritage re- mained one point back of Savoy with a 9-2 win in Fruitvale. The Dynamos play host to Nakusp at noon Sunday, while the Devils match in Nelson is at 1lp.m. Saints give coach reason to smile after giving Cariboo foe a scare @ College squad gives previously undefeated Kamloops college a run for their soccer money NEWS STAFF If you like betting for profit, put your money on the Selkirk College Saints soccer team to win the ‘Close but no cigar’ prize for the past week. The Saints travelled to Kamloops to face University College Cariboo Saturday, go- ing into the game losers of their first two contests by a combined score of 12-1. But the team that lost those two games stayed at home, as a new bunch showed up only to drop a heart-breaking last- minute 3-2 decision. Coach Bob Gurney said he was pleased with the result, not only because Kamloops would be hosting the national collegiate soccer champi- onships this year, but because they had neither been beaten nor scored upon this season, “All in all, the team played very well,” he said. “Every- Vahid Pourmokhtari Pourmokhtari scored his first of two in the early minutes of the match. The home team replied with a couple before Pourmokhtari’s second of the game sent the teams into the dressing room for halftime deadlocked at two. When the action resumed, Gurney said the Saints played the hosts even for the second half, losing only when Kam- loops scored off a corner kick in injury time. Cutting back on goals al- lowed and increasing their goals for, Gurney said the ear- ly season problems the team faced are slowly disappearing. “We're progressing,” he said. “We've started doing some things I knew would eventually happen.” With Spokane Community College in town to play the Saints Sunday, Gurney said he would like to see the team avenge a 6-1 loss to Spokane two weeks ago with an effort similar to that against Kam- loops. “Hopefully we can carry the momentum into our next game this weekend,” he said.
