HARDTOP complete with boat- house at Arrow Lakes or sell or trade for R.V. 359-7336 » Renovation waste must be addressed Martin Meyer RECYCLING ADVISORY PANEL There has been a lot said lately about the old houses in Castlegar which are being de- molished in order to clear the site for the new bridge ap- proach. Most of what I’ve heard so far is a reaction to the fact that affordable housing is being re- moved at a time when the va- cancy rate in town is near zero. There hasn't been a lot said about the impact on the waste stream. According to information published by the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corpo- ration, the residential con- struction industry is a major contributor to the nation’s waste stream. The demolition of old hous- es to make way for new pro- jects, the renovations of old buildings, and the waste pro- duced in the construction of a new homes is estimated to rep- resent more than five per cent of the total volumes of waste currently taken to landfill sites. Non-residential demolition and construction represents an additional nine per cent. The largest component of the waste is dimensional lum- ber, which is about one quar- ter of the total. Manufactured wood and drywall add up to another quarter. The remaining half consists of masonry and tile, corrugat- ed cardboard, asphalt, fiber- glass, metal wastes, as well as miscellaneous packing mate- rials and glass. Many communities across the country already have bans on certain materials from be- ing put into landfills. As a consequence, contrac- tors have to be more careful BIRTHS Bouchard — To Tam- my and Joey Bouchard of New Denver, a girl born Nov. 11 at Kootenay Lake District Hospital in Nel- son. In some cases old buildings are no longer bulldozed and then loaded into dump trucks and brought to the landfill. Instead, they are disman- tled piece by piece and the ma- terials are sold, reused or re- cycled. Likewise, contractors can reduce waste at new construc- tion projects by recycling much of the packaging materials such as corrugated cardboard and heavy paper that many items come in. Bulk purchases of fasten- ers, paint, caulking, drywall mud and nails will help to re- duce packaging. Further waste can be mini- mized by purchasing durable materials such as kiln dried wood in order to reduce warpage and shrinkage. Some waste can also be minimized by keeping new materials protected from the weather. Perhaps it’s time for West Kootenay communities to se- riously look at the waste is- sues related the demolition and construction of new homes and other buildings. It’s another opportunity to explore options for more re- sponsible handling of these wastes and reducing the input to our landfills. + exp!
