Members of the Nelson- Trail District Labor Council manned the picket lines in objection to use of a crane from Bryan's Transfer of Trail. The labor council alleges the owners of Bryan's Trans: fer support so-called right-to- work laws in B.C., which would ban closed union shops. Cominco management ap- plied to the B.C. Labor Rela- tions Board (LRB) to have the pickets removed and upon LRB advice, had the crane removed from the work site. The pickets also left. There will be a hearing in Vancouver this week by LRB on the matter, but all sources have declined to give details of a time and date. The information pickets handed out pamphlets opposing right-to-work legislation and the picket signs said there were “non-union scabs” working at Cominco. Bryan's Transfer is a mem- ber of the Independent Con- tractors and Builders Asso- ciation (ICBA) which is an active supporter of right-to- work legislation. Bryan's Transfer owner Fin Levick has an action pending against a picket orga- nizer in the B.C. Supreme Court asa result of his having a Bryan's Transfer crane re- moved from the Waneta Plaza construction site in May. Levick said it is his ICBA membership and his decision to years. Wayne is also a part owner of Bryan's Transfer. “They're doing it because I am an ICBA member and be- cause I had the guts to lay those charges,” He said that since the two operators are union members they cannot be classified as scabs, “We're paying for union protection with union dues and we're not getting it," he said. “But Iam not going to be one of those businessmen who come crawling to him.” Levick said that there are four other contractors at Co- minco, but none of them is being harassed. He said that two of them are non-union companies with ICBA affilia- tions, He declined to identify them.
