He liked the speech but * complained (nothing personal, you understand) that never, at least to his knowledge, had his unit the 111th Field Battery (artillery) commanded by Major Dalgas been given any public recognition in this area. “It was as if they had never existed," said Bob, “yet, we were a good outfit — we did our job, stayed dut of trouble and served with honor all across northern Europe.” “I realize that the poet was right when he wrote that He was born in Hong Kong in 1908... ‘veddy British,’ chuckled Bob “full many a rose is born to blush unseen," but I realize also the i to idize,” to exploit the “evil that men do,” to emphasize the anti-hero, the misfit and the “general no-good-nick, while, hypocritically voicing our belicf in the value of standards and the worth of good example. dreds of i are to every. wrong-doer to explain why he went wrong — unloved, poor, early trauma, ‘a-whole: plethora of; “complexes, the. list.ig. <= endless and to some extent may be true; But all‘are used to” distort a general liberty within a democratic society to a personal licence — a licence to kill, mutilate, disrupt and destroy security, almost without limit. Rarely is anything said of those who accept responsibility for their actions, who become good citizens in spite of adverse conditions and background, who do a good job, carry out their responsibilities and duties as law-abiding citizens and serve honorably as members of the human race. Since Bob Wood, as an individual reflects many of the virtues with which he credits his military unit and its fate, I would like to dedicate this column go both. Bob Wood is a man, who like Dr. Wm. Wright, feels strongly about certain qualities of life which we are pleased to refer rather condescendingly as “the old. fashioned virtues.” These include such qualities as kind and decent conduct, diligence and pride in one's craft, recognition of duties and responsibilities, loyalty to friends and comrades, integrity — all modified by a sense of humor. | He was born in Hong Kong in 1908; the son of a British Naval captain and raised and educated in the International Settlement of Shanghai. Here he went toa private school for boys where the curriculum was on the British model and all of his teachers were graduates of Oxford and Cambridge. “Veddy British,” chuckled Bob,” and I had a terrible accent when I came to Canada.” He sure did, added Margaret. After school he app iced asa and joined the Shanghai Scottish V were involved in four or five military actions with Chinese warlords. When these men were defeated in the Chinese, countryside they would attempt to take over the Settle- ment,” he said, “but we fought them off. “Everyone living in the Orient at that time” (the 1920s) Bob said, “knew that the real enemy was Japan and that war between Japan and the United States was inevitible. I never could understand the fiasco of Pearl Harbor.” The family moved to Vancouver in the late 20's but Captain Weod lost a major part of his possessions when the took hai in the lared war of 1982. Bob worked at his trade until 1989 and joined the. 111th Field Battery of Nelson on the day that Canada declared war .against Nazi Germany. Because of his previous military training and experience he enlisted. with the rank of sergeant. Shortly after, the 111th moved to Calgary where they were amalgamated with the 91st Battery of the 6th Field Regiment after which time they were known as the 91/111th. Because trained tradesmen were in very short supply (what has d?) he w: d to O: and as later to the Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical i as a instructor at Camp Borden, England. “RCEMB is a very diversifed,” he said “It is organized asa and made up of trad from every skilled trade. Bob returned to Canada in October 1945 as a sergeant- major. and married Margaret Dobie. ‘. After some time working across the country the Woods then got into the marina business — first with the Arrow Yacht Club and a little later built their own business — “Bob's Marina.” : Serious illness has, in recent years, meant repeated sojourns in the hospital for Bob, but Margaret, who is just as addicted to the old fashioned virtues, carries on with radios, electri and even rs and scaly fe e hospitals.” af PATHE ore some times they had to “cannabalize” two or three trucks to make one. I'll take them out on my own boat and show them about, then come in for a cup of coffee.” Visitors include a German airline official, American visitors from San Diego and Louisiana and an Australian computer expert who liked what he saw so much that.he moved to B.C. Visitors to the park who have boats are given free moorage at the dock, where they are safe. “The rocks just under the sand and the hoodlums could wreck them. but they don’t wreck them around our place," Margaret added with a grim smile. ‘The Woods issue regular fishing reports for the area but Margaret has a special talent. She goes out and stamps three times on the dock. In an instant the water is forearm deep in ‘shiners’ feeding from her fingers and nibbling at the air bubbles on her arms, while trout swim through her hands to have their backs scratched, A report by Fred Jack of CKQR Radio has brought wide interest and a spot on TV. This, then, completes my, salute to another couple of good citizens who still believe in, and maintain the old ‘fashioned virtues and to Bob's comrades ("there are still quite a few out there”) of the 111th Field. 3 * Amazing echnical skills or trainin; low 50 iv A Ha: tes G4 LtY you to be SHOCKED .when you open your West Kootenay Power bill later this summer.
