Williams said the labor movement needs new laws and a new militancy to protect itself from the rise of anti unionism. And he said Tuesday's speech to members of the business community was, in part, a suggestion to persuade them that attacking trade unions was “a very destructive path to follow.” Soviet visit protested TORONTO (CP) — Eggs anti anti-Soviet epithets were hurled outside a Toronto high school Tuesday to protest a visit by a delegation from Volgograd About 50 demonstrators at the school’s entrance engaged in shouting matches with dozens of Humberside Collegiate students. Thé' figures compare with net earnings of $4 million, or 88 cents a share on sales of $92.3 million for the com parable 1985 period Third-quarter net earnings were $5.2 million on sales of $25.5 million compared with net earnings of $400,000 on sales of $29.6 million in the third quarter of 1985. The company said in a statement that world pro duction levels of zine have been reduced during the past few months and world prices have improved to $920 US a metric tonne at the end of the third quarter from $700 US a metric tonne at the beginning of the year. Pine Point operates a lead zine property on the south shore of Great Slave Lake in the Northwest Territories. A direct confrontation between the delegation and the demonstrators was avoided when the visitors entered the school through a side door The school is in the heart of the city’s large Eastern European community and the visit sparked opposition from many who emigrated from Soviet bloc countries. WELCOMES VISITORS About 100 current events students, however, gave the visitors an enthusiastic welcome During a lively question-and-answer session, the stu dents asked about Soviet rock music, warmly applauded peace overtures and snickered when the deputy mayor of Volgograd said there were no political prisoners in his coun try Volgograd architect Vladlen Sukhoroslov, noting he had a daughter about the same age as the students, told them through an interpreter: “You would find a common language very quickly. She dresses the same as you do, has the same hairstyle and she has the same thoughts in her head.” Teacher Tom Lyons suggested the students may have learned more from bitter reaction to the visit than from anything said by the Soviet citizens. The Toronto Board of Education ruled as inadmissible Monday night a request to allow an anti-Soviet “balance” to the program. The visit is the third by a delegation from Volgograd, a city of nearly one million on the Volga River. He was replying to Premier Bill Vander Zalm who suggested earlier that legislation may be the only way to Safeway’s got it HAPPY HALLOWEEN! e Better Service — © Greater Selection © Top Quality Kellogg’s Corn Flakes x 99 resolve the costly strike. One forest industry said the strike has directly or indirectly affected British Columbia businesses to the tune of $1.1 billion. “Everyone involved says we're entitled to some protection and if he's going to get involved again he shouldn't be talking about legislation,” Munro said. In addition to the premier, two government appointees have tried to bring the parties together in the dispute which is centred on contracting out work per- formed by union members. Mediator Don Munro with drew from the talks Monday. Munroe said the premier should follow the advice in a report on the dispute by Mr. Justice Henry Hutcheon of the B.C. Appeal Court, the first government appointee in the dispute. JUDGE MADE SENSE “He understands both of us and his recommendations on contracting out make sense,” said Munro. Vander Zalm has placed members of the legislature on standby from mid-November in case the house has to be called to pass legislation ordering the union back to work Meanwhile, the B.C. Federation of Labor is preparing to back the woodworkers. “If a union like the IWA can be made impotent as an effective bargaining agent, then no union can win,” said federation president Art Kube whose organization is considering options such as rotating strikes. In Vancouver, bits of plastic were scattered on wood chip supplies of Canadian Forest Products and Crown Forest Industries. Manager Phillip Musgrave of Crown Forest Industries said those responsible must have been familiar with the industry but company spokesmen did not blame the woodworkers. Munro said his union would not condone such action. Musgrave said the plastic melts as the chips are turned into pulp and sticks to the rollers in the mill, ruining the paper He said if the plastic had not been spotted, pulp worth $500,000 would have been affected Christie’s Premium Crackers Salted or Unsalted. The strike by the International Woodworkers of America over contracting out work performed by union members is resulting in growing pressure from the union to shut off supplies to the pulp mills Canfor Corp.'s mill at Port Mellow on the Sechelt Peninsula shut down last weekend after running out of chips. In Prince George, company vice-president Mark Gunther said the Prince George Pulp and Paper and Inter continental Pulp mills have adequate chip supplies At Mackenzie, in north-central B.C., the access road to B.C. Forest Products Ltd.'s mill is being picketed by union members and pulp operations are down at present “The mill has been up and down for some time and we have had mixed success with Labor Relations Board rulings,” said BCFP chairman Ken Benson. “We have an appeal in to the LRB right now.” CROFTON OPERATES The company expects to be able to keep its mill at Crofton on Vancouver Island running for some time, Benson said MacMillan Bloedel Ltd.'s mill at Powell River can keep going at least until year-end, a company source said Elsewhere on Vancouver Island, MacMillan Bloedel's Harmac mill is running at 60 per cent of capacity because of low chip inventories, but expects to stay at this level indefinitely The Alpulp mill at Port Alberni is using a combination of pulp shiffed from New Brunswick and logs obtained locally “The IWA is trying to close the mill down, but as long as it gets favorable rulings from the LRB it can continue to stay in business,” a company official said SUPPLIES ADEQUATE On northery Vancouver Island, Crown Forest In dustries Ltd.'s ik Falls mill and the Port Alice sulphite pulp mill of Western Pulp Inc. have enough chips and logs to keep working. Western Pulp’s mill near Squamish, 60 kilometres north of here, also has an adequate supply, the company said However, B.C. shake and shingle manufacturers are beginning to feel the effects of the IWA strike. Some Fraser Valley mills are closing because of log shortages and others are running below capacity Castlegar & District Development Board New Location 1444 Columbia Avenue Castlegar, B.C.
