creature is green and scaly
but its meat is said to taste
like chicken if marinated in
beer and deep-fried.

Barring any interference
from government health offi-
cials, a popular Halifax eat-
ery and nightspot will soon
be serving alligator meat.

Chef Darrel Selig of Thack-
eray's got the idea to serve
the meat after watching a
television documentary on
alligator farming in the
southern United States.

Selig has a few dishes in
mind, like alligator soup and
burgers, but predicts the
most popular dish will be thin
strips of meat marinated and
deep-fried — an alligator
version of chicken fingers in
look, taste and cost.

All the meat will come
from the reptile’s tail, the
meatiest and best-tasting
part.

AIDS TESTS?

If you were in the market for life insurance, would you
submit to a test for AIDS, or should you even be asked to?
Many Canadian life insurance companies have introdue-

'y blood tests for IDS victims and-are-

refusing to insure anyone exposed to the virus.

As a@ result, tough questions have been rasied involving
consent and confidentiality.

Charles Black, vice-president of the Canadian Life -~
Health says strong
needed to protect insurance companies against the financial
risks posed by the virus, for which there is no known cure.

“Anyone who tests positive for the virus won't be
eligible for life insurance, at least until we knolw more about
the disease,” he said in an interview.

Federal Health Minister Jake Epp says forcing
Canadians to be tested won't help check the spread of the
virus.

An estimated 50,000 Canadians have come into contact
with AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) he
says, and while a blood test is available that can detect
antibodies, not everyone who tests positive will get the
disease.

Epp's department is investigating the suggestion that
mandatory blood tests by the life insurance industry are
discriminatory.

PASSES VIRUS
AIDS, transmitted through bodily fluids such as blood
and semen, first showed up in the United States in 1981 and
is passed most frequently by sexual contact.

A recent survey shows U.S. AIDS-sufferers or persons
who may have been exposed to the deadly virus are finding
it difficult, if not impossible, to buy individual hospital and
life insurance.

The study showed some of the largest U.S. insurance
firms — Prudential, New York Life, Aetna, TransAmeica
Occidental, Mutual of Omaha and Northwestern Mutual —
are trying to avoid writing policies for people with AIDS and
for people they think are at a high risk of developing it.

‘AIDS poses a tremendous
threat to the insurance
industry’

Those having the most trouble buying insurance policies
are the 8,711 patients, the approximately 150,000 with
AIDS-related complex (a diagnosis given to a person who
has many of the symptoms associated with AIDS) and the
estimated two million who have been exposed to the virus.

Dr. Paul Kordish, medical director for Manufacturers
Life Insurance Co. in Toronto, says “AIDS poses a
tremendous threat to the insurance industry because of the
long incubation period.”

Bob Tivey, director of AIDS Vancouver, says he
understands the concern but “only a small percentage of
people who test positive will go on to get AIDS and we don’t
think people should be unfairly discriminated against.”

The matter of discrimination was raised recently in
Montreal where one newspaper reported that some
insurance companies are testing clients for AIDS antibodies
without telling them what the tests are for.

CALLS IT ILLEGAL

Members of the Right to Privacy Committee, a Toronto
group that campaigns for the rights of homosexuals (a
high-risk segment of society) says the screening by life
insurance companies is discriminatory and the practice is
unreliable, unfair and illegal.

James Hathaway, a professor at Osgoode Hall Law
School says testing is too unreliable to be the basis for
denying insurance coverage.

In California, legislation prohibits the use of antibody-
screening tests for insurance purposes, says Dr. Gordon
Cuming, medical director for Great West Life.

Great West is among a growing number of
Canadian-based firms undertaking selective screening.

The spectre of discrimination remains, says Michael
Phair, chairman of the AIDS network in Edmonton.

Phair says the Alberta Human Rights Commission has
been told of a case where an individual prominent in the
was asked to undergo
AIDS testing and, when he refused, the company declined to
write a life insurance policy on him.

Tt is doubly frustrating to live for more than three
years with the grim statistic without ever’ receiving #
straight answer as to why Sydney, N.S., and some other
industrial Cape Breton communities are cancer hotspots.

They don't know whether to blame their own bad
habits or industrial pollution.

“It's probably more frightening and disturbing
simply to know that you die-at-e these.
diseases than everyone else without knowing why,” says
Peter Kavanagh of CBC Radio in Sydney.

He is one of five Cape Breton reporters who have
applied jointly under. Nova Scotia's Freedom of
Information Act to be given a copy Of a
government survey that might indicate whether Cape
Bretoners’ lifestyles are to blame.

“If you know why you could change your lifestyle. If
it was because you live downwind of the coke ovens then
you could move upwind.”

BLAME OVENS

Until recently, government mandarins pointed at the
Sydney Steel Corp.’s coke ovens as the main culprit.’

In the process of making coke, choking, Shite clouds
of steam and coal gases released a few times each day and
they drift over neighborhoods. such as Whitney Pier.

Coke-oven gases are laced with benzene-related
toxins. Studies in othpr coke-oven cities such as
Pittsburgh have provef similar toxins to be cancer
causing. x

In 1975 pr I health officials d federal
mortality statistics showing that Sydney's death rate
from all forms of cancer between 1973 and 1979 was'4.42
times higher than the Canadian average.

Respiratory cancers were 1.33 times above average
and stomach cancers a whopping 1.95 times higher. Other
statistics indicated that cancer deaths appeared to be
highest downwind from the coke ovens, particularly in
Whitney Pier.

DOOM OVENS ~
cleanup in
December doomed the coke ovens to closing permanently
by 1988.

The coke ovens won't close until next year and the
daily doses of coke gases continue to roll over Whitney
Pier. Yet officials have suddenly stopped portraying the
ovens as the major cancer culprit.

Now the buzzword is lifestyles — particularly the
smoking and eating habits of Cape Bretoners.

Provincial epidemiologist Pierre Lavigne surveyed
1,600 industrial Cape Bretoners in late 1985 and early
1986 to determine if there is a correlation between their
lifestyles and high cancer rates.

After initially refusing to release the lifestyles
survey, Health Minister Ron Russell finally volunteered
to make it public in about two months.

But he cautioned that he isn't happy with the survey,
saying it means nothing because the results can't be
compared to anything. He intends to have a control study
done in some other community so scientific comparisons
can be made.

The U.S. government's top
disease prevention official
says he hopes a report that
cast doubt on whether breast
self-examination alone pre-
vents early death from can-
cer won't discourage women
from performing the proce-
dure.

While the statistical an-
alysis takes no stand on the
worth of self-examinations,
Dr. Michael McGinnis said he
worries that U.S. women will
interpret it as a recom-
mendation against them.

“The Public Health Service
feels it is still appropriate for
physicians to recommend
breast self-examination to
their: patients,” McGinnis
said in an interview.

In a study published in the
Journal of the American
Medical Association, mem-
bers of the U.S. Preventive
Services Task Force said
“the problem with breast
self-examination is not evi-
dence of a lack of effect, but
lack of evidence.”

While a woman's risk of
dying an early death from
cancer decreases measurably
if a doctor examines her
breasts or takes breast
X-rays, the same has not
been established for breast
self-examinations, the report
said.

The task force is financed
jointly by the federal gov-
ernment and the W.-K. Kel
logg Foundation.
