LocdSPORTS SERVICE WITH A SMILE News photo by Jonathan Green Stanley Humphries student Lee Melanik looked more than happy to put the ball into play Wednesday, as a handful of junior and senior boys hopefuls hit the court for some after school practice. Pottle returns to Kansas State a happy camper Jonathan Green SPORTS REPORTER When it comes to summer break from school, most students leave happy but don’t look forward to returning in the fall. . For Denise Pottle, that wasn’t the case. The 19-year-old Castlegar na- tive came home unhappy in May after a frustrating second year at Kansas State University. A member of the school’s golf team, Pottle went from being a leader to one who had trouble qualifying for tournaments, and for that she blamed problems with the mental part of her game, where she would put a little too much thought into some shots. “I worry too much about it and (my coaches) said I have to stop worrying about it and just get up and hit the ball,” she said in a May interview. “But it’s just kind of hard, it’s like anything, to be as good as you were before you have to find-out what’s wrong and work at it.” And work at it she did, spend- ing a lot of time at the local course when she came home, and the ef- fort has paid off. “I’m shooting good right now,” a happy Pottle said from the uni- versity Wednesday. Pottle said she got a lot of en- couragement and help from course pro Denny McArthur and her par- ents when she came back to Castlegar, and it’s made a world of difference. “My coach was pretty happy with the way I was shooting,” she said. “He didn’t expect that big ofa change.” Pottle said she spends most of her time away from class perfect- ing her game, trying to keep it from disappearing like it did a year ago. “I’ve been practicing Monday through Friday for probably four- to-six hours a day,” she said, adding that things look to be back to normal. “Up to this point, (my game) has just been great. I don’t think it can get any better.” \ Denise Pottle Pottle said the Kansas State golf team currently has eight members, which she expects will increase to 12 in the near future. But because the school is only allowed to enter five players per tournament, each golfer who wants to participate must compete through inter-school qualifying. A year ago, Pottle said she spent a fair bit of time on the out side looking in, finishing at times with the sixth best score when on- ly the top five qualified. But this year things are differ- ent, as she breezed to a spot in the season’s first tournament today at New Mexico State with a four- round qualifying score of 315. “It’s kind of nice making the first tournament,” she said. “I’m happy.” Pottle said her game in qualify- ing was solid both mentally and physically from start to finish. “It showed I could keep it to- gether, which was good,” she said.“You’re pretty serious when you play those rounds.” And staying serious is what Pottle says she hopes to do, as the top 20 per cent in each tourna- ment earn a spot in the next one. For the others, it’s back to quali- fying. With a season that runs for five weeks, stops for winter and re- sumes in the spring, Pottle said she wants to do one thing more than any other. “Not to get so uptight and wor- ry so much,” she said. And if that happens, Pottle says her junior year could be a good one. “I think this is the best team we've ever had.” Need acar loan? We'll make it ha;
