Garvin, Grace Presbyterian Church A few days ago I ventured to walk down Fourth Street — just a short distance to one of the stores, a few doors off Columbia, which is trying to manage during the chaos of “Revitaliza- tion”. I am sure that when the merchants of Fourth Street look at the results of last summer’s work, difficult as it was for the businesses on the affected streets last year, they will conclude that it is all worth it. But for the present it is Fourth Street’s turn to be a mess. It was quite a challenge to reach my destination. I had to make a circuitous route around piles of earth, holes in the ground, mud puddles, construction materials and barricades. Perhaps if I’d paid more attention to the barricades in the first place I wouldn’t have had to contend with __ So many other obstacles. But I probably wouldn’t have gotten to my destination either. AsT pickad'iay way Arourid the humps andiBiiows.'s quotktiod Gaskets Aon yy ines & Bota by a man called Isaiah 4bout 2700 years ago, and quoted by another named John some 2000 years ago. It goes: “In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Every valley shall be lifted up, and every mountain and hill be made low; The uneven ground shall become level, and the rough places a plain.” (Isaiah 40:3, 4 NRSV) While some of the imagery might seem apt, I don’t think either Isaiah or John was talk- ing about Fourth Street, or any other physical roadway for that matter. Isaiah was pointing forward to the day when God would send His Saviour to His people, and was admonishing them to get ready to receive Him, getting rid of those obstacles in their lives which would prevent Him from entering. When John quoted Isaiah’s prophecy 700 years later, he -- was saying: The time has come, the Saviour is about to arrive. Prepare to receive Him by repenting of those things in your lives that are obstacles to His free access. And when Jesus came the next day, John said “here is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!” (John 1:29) “Revitalization” means giving new life. Forth Street is get- ting new life, as it is levelled, obstacles removed, barricades taken down, and a straight, smooth roadway is made. As much as downtown Castlegar needed new life, surely we all do too. What are the obstacles in our lives: the piles of stuff, the holes, the mud puddles, the barriers, that keep God from having free access into our lives, giving us new life and working through us for the revitalization of our community? 1801 Connors Rd. Sanday School 945 am ‘Sanday Morning Worship 10:45 am It is significant that in Luke’s account of John’s message, after appealing for “preparing the way of the Lord” with a straight, level road, he concludes with the words “and all flesh shall see the salvation of God.” “Revitalization”? Let’s start in our own lives, and see what can happen when we prepare the way for God to work in and through us...
