Monte Carlo had a legiti-
mate claim to being a
“driver's car.”

The big-block engine

disappeared by 1976, but
Monte Carlo sales were
on a roll. New styling
highlighted by stacked
quad headlamps propelled
Chevy's personal coupe to
record sales. Two years
later the Monte Carlo was
downsized (losing 800
pounds and eight inches
of wheelbase). the ‘76

model also saw the intro-
duction of a V6 engine
(which became tur-
bocharged in the 1978
model year).

New sheet metal in 1981
marked a return to the
understated styling of the
original Monte Carlo. A
sign of the times: two
diesel engines (a V6 and

Chevy raised the ante in
NASCAR in 1986 with
the introduction of the
limited-edition Monte
Carlo SS Aero Coupe,
which featured a sloping
rear backlight. A new
Luxury Sport (LS) also
was launched which

travelled a long and wind-
ing road from 1970 to
1988. However, two
things never changed:
Monte Carlo always had
only two doors and an.
