City to talk with school board Corinne Jackson NEWS REPORTER It may not be too late. City council can submit another brief to the province’s Ed- ucation Funding Review Panel if they act quickly. Cindy Spangelo said the panel is still accepting briefs but they are working on a final report to be delivered to the Min- istry of Education by the end of November. Pointing out the Oct. 20 deadline for submissions, Span- gelo said “knowing that it’s a little past deadline, there is not as much time to look at them. F “But we are continuing to receive briefs and we continue to read them,” the panel chair said from Victoria Thursday. Spangelo’s comments were made in response to some Castlegar city councillors’ concerns about a report made to the panel Oct. 8 in Cranbrook. Some of the councillors are particularly concerned with rec- ommendations made in the first half of a brief written and pre- sented by Coun. Doreen Smecher on behalf of the city. The report recommends changes that would hand over school board authority to the provincial government. Spangelo subsequently sent a letter to Smecher that states “your thoughts and experience count and will be considered in our final report.” When asked how much weight Smecher’s recommenda- tions will carry in her final report to the ministry, Spangelo answered “we thanked all the people who presented briefs.” She would not say if the letter was a form letter or not. Span- gelo also wouldn't say if the city’s report could be rescinded. Spangelo said, “we would like to talk directly with the per- son who presented the brief,” if the city wants wants the re- port rescinded. Coun. Kirk Duff has come out against these recommenda- tions, and at Tuesday’s council session he presented a motion to hold a meeting with School District No. 9. “If councillors are going to have any input that’s any dif- ferent (from the brief) this would be the opportunity to do it,” Duff said. According to Duff, council voted on having Mayor Audrey Moore and Smecher go to Cranbrook to give a report. Al- though they did not specifically vote on endorsing the brief, “it was certainly implied by the motion.” It will be decided at the joint school board/council meeting whether the city wants to send in another brief, Duff said. A date for that meeting has not been set. Trustee Evelyn Voykin said she is looking forward to the op- portunity to meet with council. Concerned with the report’s “questioning the integrity of the board,” Voykin said “I would like to see city council rec- ognize the very serious concern our board has and hope they'd ask the first part of the brief be removed from consideration.” LOCAL MLA CALLS FOR CASTLEGAR-ROBSON BRIDGE TO BE UNION BUILT, PAGE 3
