With a little less than one month left in the ski season, Red Mountain Ski Club re- ports that the area has experienced its most success- ful season ever. Among factors that contri- buted: to this success were the lean snow conditions and severe cold’ weather that plagued the Rockies for much of the winter, which reaulted Interior, concentrated marketing ‘effort by’ the Ski Club in Alberta and Washington. In addition, revenue from sales of season tickets — traditionally the main source of earnings for Red Mountain — were up substantially due to the early start of the season and the consistent weather ans snow conditions experienced during: the months of December and January.’ : Ski Area Manager, Bob Steckle, pointed out several long term benefits to. the local community that a con- tinuing successful ski opera- tion at Red Mountain holds. " partieulatly “families,” he aye well, ot the nearly $1.4 million in revenue raised this season, nearly 60 per cent will flow back into the local community. in the form. of ‘wages and» purchases’ of, goods and services, Steckle | said. Tourist dollars: generated: by skier visits to the region: contribute also significantly: — not only to the success of the ski area, but also to the many, local motels, hotels, restaurants and other service industries throughout the ‘area. Steckle conservatively estimated this to be well in excess of $2 million for the 1981-82 season. Although he stressed’ the importance of the ski club maintaining its strong com- munity focus, Steckle pre- dicts slow but steady increa-. ses in visitor, traffic to Red Mountain in ‘the. future as more and. more people dis- cover the: West Kootenays. |’ “Our rates are truly afford-. able compared to other areas) @ and visit in: It serves an imp winter recreational need for citizens in the Rossland, Trail and Castlegar communities, Stoeckle said. “The. principal aim of the ski ‘club.-remains providing our..members’ and local en- thusiasta with the best skiing possib! t affordable rates — Save over $ 400 CUBE PUZZLE Spectal...* 1 5b9 Cube Puzzle : Key Chain Special...* 1 59 Carl's Drug Mart Castleaird Plaza OpenThisSunday. | Noon-1 p.m. &6-7p.m. strike. or, work-torule . or their praise of the hospitality and friendly service they find ‘here, a feature that is some- times missing in some of the new large-scale regorts”..
