The once a

college, is one of about four
waterborne schools in North
America. Outfitted with tu-
tors, teaching materials, vid-
eotaped courses’ and class-
rooms, the ‘ship. makes its

. way to remote B.C. commun::

ities, but is based in the
northern town of Port Hardy.

“She's the only compre-
hensive college ship around I
know of,” says skipper
George Barber. On board
there is also a theatre that
can seat 40 people and chart-
room-classroom for marine
studies,

tug, then a tramp steamer,
the Samarinds has sophis-
ticated navigational. equip-
ment to sail through fog-
shrouded coastal inlets and
blustery ‘straits.

“I. guess we're the only
west coast college I know of
-using satellite navigation in
its curriculum,” saya Barber.
