Castlegar Council held its
anual meeting with the vol
unteer fire department this
week. Ald. Albert
Calderbank, protective ser-
vices committee chairman,
called the meeting “reason-
ably successful.”

In an interview, Calder
bank said the firemen dis-
cussed new equipment and
the proposed fire training
centre.

Couneil suggested the fire-
men form a committee to set
out the type of equipment
needed for the centre.

Calderbank also said the
city doesn't have enough
funds for a centre right now,
but the department offered
volunteer labor to build it.

The city has budgeted
$5,000 this year for the cen
tre.

David Lodge is a very Fenny writer whose comic
genius surpasses itself in his new novel Small World. This
‘small world is that of a “global campus” of academics who
fly round the world attending international conferences,
competing with each other for glittering prizes, and
becoming embroiled in hilarious situations. These
conference delegates pursue academic romances as well
as professional laurels and many a literary scuffle takes
place, to the reader's delight!

Mary Gordon is a popular writer whose novels also
win critical acclaim. Men and Angels is her third novel
about women’s lives; the others were Final Payments and
The Company of Women.

Anne Foster is an art historian. She's also the
happily married mother of two young children and she's
faced with a year’s separation from her husband when he
goes off for an academic fellowship in France. She can't go
because the most challenging job of her career can’t be
postponed. A live-in babysitter, the influence of a woman
dead for 45 years and a strange man, all help to disrupt
her carefully organized life.

Brian Moore's fiction can't be pinned down into any
distinct type. His latest work Black Robe is a historical
novel, set in the wilderness of 17th century Canada when
native Canadians were in bitter conflict with the French
soldiers, fur trappers and Jesuit fathers, the Black Robes.
The natives saw the Black Robes as destroyers threat-
ening their gods and sorcerers; the Black Robes saw the
natives as souls to be saved. The extra-ordinary hero,
Jesuit Father LaForgue, sets forth in a mission that may
end in torture and death but he’s sustained by faith and a
dream of martyrdom. The tale is a ferocious one, and
rings of authenticity told with an unsparing realism
which chills and enthralls the reader.

Everyone loves the Queen Mother. Her popularity
has never waned since the day she married her Bertie,
the future George VI and, now, in her mid 80s, she's still
the best loved person in Britain. In The Queen Mother,
royal biographer, Ann Morrow, gives us a close up view
of this charming woman, whose friendly smile and frothy
hats mask a will of granite — “the nicest sort of granite!”
This was amply displayed during the war when the King
and Queen insisted on staying in London during the air
raids, and also in her refusal to forgive the Dutchess of
