Dad had his ways of not sparing the rod. Olaf and I
were playing by our household water tap which was-a
pipe outside our kitchen door. Dad caught me spraying
water on Olof and so he held my head under the tap. It
was a real time of cooling off and a lesson well learned.
But I do remember mother comforting me as she dried
me off.

I spent many good years on the farm. I remember
when Fred Babaeff arranged to send away for an Atlas
muscle building set. Dad heard of it and said I could get
my exerise clearing land, which I guess I did by helping

him on both the homestead and home places. Later, I got

a job in 1940 from the Berquist brothers, driving an old

logging truck. They had a mill close to the former

Noor: Dad made me quit, as he thought the job too

ngerous, possibly because of poor brakes on those
steep hills.

It must have been after my school years when
Mother and I drew out my bank account to buy a bike and
chest of drawers from Miles Parker who was moving
away from Kinnaird. I said no to the bike as there were
not enough level places around to ride on to make it
worthwhile. I think the money went to fixing my teeth
instead.

& recollections

But I do remember a brighter side. colin hay with
dad, then the most fun of all when we went down to
Blueberry Creek to fish. In those days it wasn’t hard to

help at home. Possibly it was not the best for my
schooling, it being my last year, but I was all for it at the
time.

It was hard leaving home for the army in 1942; I had
hardly ever been away. Dad wasn't very well, (he became
ill after Olaf died in 1937) and leaving my two young
brothers, and mother behind with all her responsibilities
was difficult. I arranged to send back all the money I
could, but army pay was pretty small in those days.

Mother must have been 15 or 16 when she went to
Nelson to stay with her Aunt Annie and go to school to
study to be a teacher. But she gave that chance up to go
home to help as Grandma Killough was expecting and
either Jim or Helen was soon to be born.

At that time, mother met Dad. How different things
might have been for us all if she hadn't been so unselfish
and had kept on going to school. We wouldn't be here!

P.S. Speaking of bears — They were still around in
the ‘60s when Gwen lived alone in the old farm home.
One evening she heard a noise in her pantry in the
kitchen and when she opened the door she saw a brown
bear with its head and shoulders through the window
eating everything he could reach.

She picked up a broom and drove him back outside
and then phoned son Bob who drove right over to shoot

Dr. Ted Sahistrom of Redmont, Wash., reaches a bit

further into the past, in his letter to establish a parallel

between Gwen (Grannie) Sahistrom and her mother,

Lillian (Mom) Killough. He says:

Dear Bob:

In writing to you I think of you as the spokesman and
leader of the Sahistrom family, but in reality I am
speaking through you to Greg and Carl and all the
families.

It is sad for Loth Elmer and myself to realize that
Auntie Gwen is no longer with us. However, we are glad
that the suffering is over, she has lived a long and very
fruitful life. We will miss her and know that all who live
nearby will also miss her, even more.

My memory of Gwen goes back to the year 1920,
I was eight years old. Gwen was 18 and Elmer was two.
He wore jumpers made from flour sacks, dyed orange.
Then he sat on two dozen eggs, which broke; and you can
imagine the rest. Since then he has much more aplomb,
which befits the legal profession. However, I'm getting
off the track, this is what happens when you look back!

It was after Olaf's death that Charlie began reading
