Phote tor CosNews by Coro! Krahn Pulpit & Pew By TED BRISTOW Castlegar United Church The Olympics have given us some wonderful mem: ories. I say this even though, at the time of writing, I don't know how many medals Canada has won. In fact,|I'm not interested in which country does best. I guess I'm not a great fan of the Olympics. The pre-Olym- pie hype didn't grab me. The show-biz bores me. And the expense really bothers me. Nonetheless, I'm still posi- tive about the wonderful meméties many will take away from these games. For the athletes, just to be able to compete with the best should be remembered as a reward for all’ their hard work and dedication. And the experience of meeting people from all around the world could be a mind-opener for many young people. I believe the world needs to meet one another at every opportunity in order to recognize our common humanity. And the Olympics will have made athletes and spectators alike dream a dream of a world that plays together instead of hurting one another. That's a mem- ory worth recalling again and again. We need such positive memories to remind us of what's important, to keep us going in the right direction. All of us have memories of certain special moments that remind us of what we believe in. God-memories are among our good memories. desires, responsibilities, and other discoveries we have made through the years. Included in our memories, for many of us, are certain moments wher we just knew God was with us. Maybe it was Help at a bad time, Joy during a good time, or another source of Otherness. Many people can look back at certain times and say that’s when God was real to them. That memory has helped them ever since to keep believing during the ordinary times. One way I look at the Bible is as a> collection” of the memories of such times when God was very near. I like to try to get behind the words of the Bible to the experience that prompted such faith. When I do, I am often re- But ‘ies are no good if we let them fade, for- getting what once was im- portant about them. If some of the Olympic experiences of dedication bringing its rewards, of all people being alike, of a world playing together, fail to re- main as good lessons that guide future conduct, then the Olympfes will have been a failure, and the medals mere trinkets.
