High quality food, that's fast? Does such a combination exist If it didn't, it does now. The Rizzotti's have, for five weeks now, been operating a interna- tionally-known fast food sand- wich shop aptly called ‘Subway’. Located in the Castleaird Plaza, the Rizzotti's Subway Shop has been extremely popu- lar in CastJegar since they first Food preparation is a very serious thing, which is why the staff at Subway take precautions to ensure safe handling of afl food. Corporately, Subway is extremely successful, and has been the fastest growing fran- chise in the world for the past four years. Here in Castlegar, Subway offers food that is top quality: all vegetables are fresh, meats and poultry are low in fat, real (not imitation) seafood and of course fresh baked bread. Com- bine this with fast, friendly and efficient service and you have a ion that is unb : You might call Castlegar’s Sub- way shop ‘fast food with a con- science’, since it compliments today's healthy cating and living lifestyles. "I am so sure this will go over well in Castlegar. I firmly believe in these products,” said John. The community believes in the products Subway is serving as well. In their first few days of operation, the shop sold an esti- mated 650 subs a day. “We had the highest number of sales for an opening shop out of all the other 62 Subway stores in Western Canada,” John said. Why is the Subway restaurant in Castlegar so popular? John thinks it is because many people in this community believe in eating healthy—and were raised that way. “There are a lot of people in Castlegar who bake their own bread and grow their own veg- etables. They are very health conscience here. I think that might be one reason why this shop is successful.” Food is a personal thing. Which is why customers at Sub- way choose all their toppings and condiments to give their sub that added touch. Bread is baked between 12 - 15 times each day, the meat contains no bi-prod- ucts. Freshness is a priority. “We always have fresh bread—not just once or twice a week, but every single day." The bright, clean surround- ings, the smell of fresh bread, and colourful vegetables make the Subway shop a great place to dine. Combine this with a staff that has the three E's (no we're not talking the Triple E Senate) energetic, efficient and eager to Please, and you have created a great atmosphere. The Rizzotti's employ 18 peo- ple in full-time and part-time Positions, all of whom, said John, have great work ethics and great attitudes. “It can get crazy around here When it's noon and people are lined up and hungry, there's a lot of pressure involved.” Even though they are all new to the job, the staff is doing very well, and the employees enjoy working with both the food and the public. “We always try to smile. Even if things get a little hectic," said John. For dessert, or if you're hun- gry for a snack, Subway also sells freshly baked cookies, brownies and muffins at a very inexpensive price. All things considered, the Subway shop has created a mar- ket that is affordable, fresh and filling. "We get a lot of liments about the food we serve because of these three things,” John said. Another reason why the Sub- way franchise is growing so quickly is the customers. “We value each ‘and every customer who walks through our door. They are somebody. We talk to them, we call them by name, and we're always there to serve them,” said John. Fresh food that's presented fast and in a friendly manner, what else could you ask for? “I'm not sure what else we could be doing, but we'd be more than willing to find out,” John finished. Is your child dreaming of becoming a model? If you are the parents of a teenager who is thinking of get- ting into modeling, then this arti cle is for you If your son or daughter think they are the only ones who will be working hard in this line of work, they're kidding themselves. Most young people don't realize that if they are under 18, they will need adult supervision Besides, I don't think there are many parents who would let their children go off to a strange place and be taken care of by strangers. When my own mother was modeling in Portugal, my grand- mother would always travel with her and keep an eye, not just on my mother, but on everyone else who was there. In the modeling busi like other b there are people who will take advantage of someone's inno- cence and i you trust the people with whom your child is travelling. There are a lot of questions to consider, and both parent and child should dis- cuss them in detail. Questions such as: Is this modeling agency a reputable one? There are a lot Tach ot Ruck Joan Andrade |} of crooked people who are ready to pounce on unsuspecting prey. And certificates are very easy to forge. So ask around, and if no one has heard of this agency before, there is a chance this could be a scam. Another important thing to ask for example, a young person just Starting out-could be told that they have got what it takes and therefore they'll be rich and famous in no time. The catch of course, is that this person do exactly as they are told. In some cases however, they are pulled into a deep dark hole where prin- ciples and moral might be com- promised. This is one of the reasons why I wanted to write this particular article. I think it is a great thing for a parent to play a major role in their child's career decision- making, especially if the child's career choice is modeling. If your son or daughter must travel to Vancouver or any other city with a fashion centre, as a parent, you might consider trav- elling along with them, unless for is If the agency is not willing to give you any, or if they say they can't give out that type of information, you know they are not on the level. GAIRNS, David W. Municipal Consultant LETTE: PARTIED DP Joining the war against pollution Those billowing clouds of foam we see in our rivers and lakes are due to phosphates. Because too many phosphates have been entering our water- ways, algae becomes over-abun- dant, uses all the oxygen in the water and chokes out our valu- able marine life. In addition to the algae prob- lem, whiteners in detergents such as NTA (nitro-tri-acetic acid) and EDTA (ethylene diaminotetra- acetate) create compounds with heavy metals, and these com- pounds are extremely difficult to break down. If all this isn’t enough, most household cleaning products are lethal and the packages are not childproof. Nor are there ade- quate: instructions on how to treat accidental poisoning. Laundry Powder: 250 mL of pure soap flakes such as Ivory Snow 25-55 mL of washing soda (adjust according to water hard- ness) Good products: Soap Factory products; Shak- lee; some Amway products such as Koolwash (check others for phosphates); and there are new products in your local supermar- kets and health food stores. In order to substitute soap for manufactured detergents, it is first important to remove deter- soaking stubborn stains. Then sodium silicate is added to pre- vent corrosion in your washing machine and plumbing. They add perfume. Then there are builders such as phosphates and surfac- = Ss = = Lol ZOo=aro< tants to soften the water. By returning to old fashioned soap, look at all the chemicals we are omitting from our homes, environment and the residue from all these chemicals won't be entering our bodies by contact between clothing and skin. On the downside of using pure soap, soap curd, a greasy grey film, may stay on our clothes if the water is too hard. Just adjust by using more washing soda. Soft Soap (a jellied basic soap to use around the house) 1/4 cup pure soap flakes or grated soap ends 1 cup of water Melt in saucepan on low heat. Use for hand washing, fine wash- ables and light cleaning. Bleach is another chemical that is detrimental to our earth because it bonds with other hemicals and b resistant gent residue from our clothing by washing them once with hot water add 1/4 cup of washing soda. Look at it this way, what you are removing are chemicals such as: linear alkylate sulfonate (high-sudsing agent) or alkane sulfonate, alkyl ethoxylate sul- fate, or alky! sulfate, to name a few; then there are oil removing agents such as ethoxylated alco- hols and alkyl amine oxides. If that wasn’t enough, germicidal agents and chemicals that have fabric soft capabil are in to biodegrading. Never mix chlo- rine bleach with chemicals, such ammonia or an acid such as vinegar. The fumes are deadly. A Safer Whitener: 1 part hydrogen peroxide 8 parts water Soak the garments in the solu- tion and rinse. Better still, do as your grand- mother would have: hang your clothes in the sunshine and let Mother Nature take care of the P detergents, and there are’ bleach- ing agents, enzymes to break down soils and stains, amylase to break down starches, protease for proteins and enzymes for pre- Pp . They'll also smell won- derful.
