Bearing on the subject of Ross- land as a jobbing center, a gentle- man mentioned the matter of a cer- tain mineral water, to purchase which he had come from the Boun- dary country to Rossland. Here he found that no agency existed, and that the only place he could make the purchase was in Nelson. Con- sequently he went to. Nelson and purchased the balance of his sup- plies so that he could make one shipment. This is just an instance ot how Rossland lets trade slip by. Emille Zola has published a lengthy letter concerring the Drey- fus verdict. Alter describing his horror on hearing the verdict, which he regards as a moral Sedan, he ac- uses the jarmy chiefs of having crushed Dreyfus in order to save themselves from prison, and makes an appeal to the government, which he says will return to France the’ honor she has lost by the Rennes verdict, a verdict that he describes as ‘fa most extraordinary attempt against truth and justice.” He as- serts that he knew positively. in January of last year that Esterhazy was the real traitor, the latter hav- ing furnished Col. Schwarzkoppen with numerous documents, many in his own handwriting, a complete coilection of which is now in Berlin. At their meeting in Nelson, the members of the Canadian Mining Institute took a hand in Provincial affairs and passed a resolution con- cerning the Eight Hour law, as fol- lows: ‘‘Be it resolved that this In- stitute feels the necessity of record- ing its strong disapproval of recent legislation in this Province, legisla- tlon that was unasked for by the miners and which interferes with the freedom of contract by restric- ting the hours of labor urderground which has lead to the closing down of many active mines in this Prov- ince and has causeda disturbance of the cordial relations which had hitherto existed between capital and labor; also that the committee be authorized to take such action as it may think fit and torward a copy of this resolution to the Hon. the Minister of Mines. Fortunately the relations between the mine own- ers of Rossland and the miners have remained harmonious, and there is little danger but that they will cor- tinue so. MORE EVIDENCE GIVEN (Continued from Fourth page ) trouble of collecting. He had re- cently been advised by the mayor that as he received a salary of $500 a year he would be expectcd to at- tend to all city cases without further fee. He considered, however, that he was entitled to the same: fee as any other physician when called in to attend a patient who could pay the fees.
