CASTLEGAR NEWS, February 23, 1983’ “CASTLEGAR NEW: ' S, February 23, 1983 B83 By CHERYL WISHLOW . Staff Writer Robin McLeish eats, sleeps and breathes downhill skiing — evident by his casual nature of performing leg stretches on the floor of the lobby in Trail's Terra Nova hotel, during an interview Monday for the Shell Cup Canadian men’s downhill championships. McLeish, in his second year with the A squad of the Canadian National men’s downhill ski team, is here with most of the team and will try to recapture the ‘title he held in 1981. “I will do my damndest to.try (and win it),” said the 26-year-old who has spent'six:years on the national team. McLeish is one of 104 skiers vying for the Shell Cup championship, scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday on Granite Mountain in Rossland. Urs Raeber of Switzerland cur- ‘rently holds the title. He won it at Panorama in Invermere last year, but the skier, ranked seventh on the World Cup scene, is not here to. defend his title. Ken Read won the Cup from 1975-1980,- excluding 1977 when the race was cancelled. Last year's World Cup champion, Steve Podborski, and Todd Brooker — who won his firat World Cup earlier this year — have never held the title. Read said in an interview Monday, “The competition will be within the A team itself.” from outside.” The national team has been here since last ing for the race, have a chance to ski on the course until Tuesday:: Though still got a chance to try the course out. normal people,” McLeish said. In all seriousness, the team has been trying to learn the course on the face of Granite Mountain, attempting to find the best line in the course. : The team moves to Aspen, Colorado and then Lake Louise, Alberta for the final two Shell World Cup events of the season after the Shell Cup at Granite. This season, 12 skiers still have a chance for the World Cup title, including Podborski, Read and Brooker. Podborski is currently ranked fifth on the: World Cup ranked 29th, will have to wait until next year for a chance at the title. “We've just been free skiing — having fun like scene, Brooker eighth and Read 10th.
