The album f¢atures tracks by Randy Bachman, K.D. Lang, the Powder Blues, Bolero Lava, the Veverley Sisters, 54-40, Denise Me Cann, H.B. Concept, the Vil lains and the B-Sides. Open Your Heart was wri tten by Vancouver musicians Duane O'Kane and Id Guin ness, who have each spent about 50 hours a week or ganizing the project in the last three months. It was written around Christmas, when “all the horror stories were coming out,” says Guinness. “It be: came more and more difficult to listen to it and not do something.” They were organizing the Musicians fight famine release of Open Your Heart as a single when news of the Northern Lights and USA for Africa benefit tunes hit the media. Realizing they couldn't really compete with the superstars on each rec- ord, they decided to go to an album. “It's a different con- cept,” says O'Kane. “We're helping the cause while help- ing out the lIgcal music scene.” Guinness solicited unre- leased master tapes through an ad in the local music trade paper, Recording Monthly. “It's a bit more gospel- sounding than the others,” says Guinness. “The sincerity is fairly evi: dent on this track,” says O'Kane. “It's congruent with what the project is all about. There are people dying — we're trying to remember that.” The initial pressing will be 1,300 and the record will sell for $7.99, of which $6 to $6.50 will go to OXFAM.
