‘ es Castlégar News November 23, 1988 x ELECTION '88 B.C. NDP to ‘raise hell'in Ottawa By RON SUDLOW Canadian Press VANCOUVER Although nearly half of its 43 members now come from British Columbia, the NDP will remain a national force, the party's provincial director of organization said Tuesday “British Columbia will send a very influential and very large part of our caucus 19 members but that doesn't change the character of the party,” John Pollard said in a post-election interview. “We are still a national party “We emphasized the same issues in every region. Those members who were elected in every region all campaigned against free and campaigned for a fair tax system and opportunities for men and trad equal women.” However, Ian Waddell, the New Democrats’ B.C. caucus chairman in the last Parliament who won in Port Moody-Coquitlam after his Vancou ver Kingsway seat was wiped out by redistribution, said he expects the B.C. influence will make the NDP more left-leaning federally ‘I think we're going to raise hell in Ottawa. I think we're going to be a lot sharper, harder. We've got a lot of experience.” Because of the influence of its B.C. wing, the party will be “a little more left wing than we've seen the NDP federally before.” While the NDP was blanked in the Maritimes and Quebee in Monday's federal election, its 43 seats were a record for the party. The Conser vatives won with 170 seats and the Liberals had 81 In Ontario, home leader Ed Broadbent, NDP support dropped to 10 seats from 13. But momentum picked up on the Prairies as the New Democrats captured 10 of two of 14 in province of 14 Saskatchewan seats, Manitoba, a first-seat-toehold in Alberta and retained the Yukon seat TIGHT RACE The 19 seats out of 32 in British Columbia nearly became 20 but Johanna den Hertog lost to Con servative Kim Campbell in Van couver Centre by 279 votes in a count not decided until 5 a.m. Tuesday The NDP, which said a recount was doubtful, made its gains at the expense of the Conservatives who had 19 B.C. seats in 1984 when 28 ridings were contested. The New Democrats won eight seats in 1984 Jane Frost, the Tories’ campaign chairman in British Columbia, said the overwhelming national issue of trade, rather than provincial issues, helped the New Democrats. “It was very much a national cam paign and not one of provincial issues,” she said. “B.C. tends to do what the rest of the country doesn't free do. “British Columbians don't like the federal government particularly and they don't understand it.” Russell Brink, chairman of the B.C. Liberal campaign which elected only John Turner but increased its share of the popular vote in the province to 20 pet cent from 16 per cent, said his party was hurt by a late switch of anti-free trade votes to the NDP. There was a fair bit of tactical voting in opposition to free trade. We are clearly third (in British Colum bia) but our base is stronger than our final vote showed.” BUILD BASE Brink said the Liberals must de- velop their provincial wing, which has no seats in the B.C. legislature, to do well federally Then, when you win the federal you win the overlapping pro- There is one Liberal seat, vincial seat Labor claims it helped dump Tories OTTAWA (CP — Organized labor helped defeat Conservatives in 45 to 60 per cent of ridings on its hit lists in Monday's election, union leaders say “It's remarkable we did this well when you consider the millions of dollars that were spent by business and employers in favor of free trade said Carol Coplea, a spokesman for the country's postal unions The big postal unions spent more than $1 million on commercials and billboards attacking Canada Post's privatization and super-mailbox pro grams. During the campaign, two million brochures were sent into 49 Conservative ridings across Canada where the unions were trying to de feat candidates. When the of the 49 seats opposition. They had virtually no impact in strongly Con servative Quebec and Alberta "We believe our campaign tributed to the general mood of people in key ridings to make a change from the Conservatives,” said Coplea. “Of the 38 Conservative (incumbents) who defeated across Canada, 22 were on our target con were lists.” The Canada Public Service Alliance of targeted 25 ridings, most with incumbent Conservatives, and the Tories were defeated in 15 of them, said PSAC president Daryl Bean.
