The CRIC, which regulates the telecommunications industry in Canada, has asked an industry com- mittee to revise its requirements so telephones will have to be adaptable to hearing aids. Ihe committee, the terminal at- chment program advisory commit- tee, has a code of standards which the federal Department of Com munications relies on when certilying telephone equipment. These certifications apply federally regulated telephone panies — Bell Canada, B.C. lel and NorthwesTel. CRIC spokesman Pon tbriand said older telephones were compatible with hearing aids by ac cident. They emitted a slight magnetic field which allowed hearing aids to pick up the telephone signal. to the com- Pierre Invites berry ol bingy ae ted An adult education general: instruction at the literacy ler Collective Agreement 2. Instead, months-of frustration and aggravation befell an Ontario family when the mother died leaving a small estate but no will. The woman, says lawyer Peter Mills, had one son and an estranged daughter living ‘in the United States, The daughter was legally an heiress but wouldn’t respond to letters or any other form of communication “lt was just a nightmare as to what to do recalls Mills, a lawyer in Barrie, Ont. The result was a costly set of court orders and a year's delay before the estate was settled. The son received’ a pittance after paying legal fees, and the daughter, who continued to refuse to answer let- ters, was sent a cheque for an equally small amount PUTIN WRITING “*in this particular case it wasn’t a large estate and the legal costs were very hard on the estate,’ Mills says. “If we could have retrieved the old lady from the grave, we would have said: If you're not talking to the daughter, make a will and cut her out or do whatever you want — but put it in writing.” Lawyers and financial planners agree a will is the most important aspect of estate planning will can provide all that’s necessary to ensure an orderly transfer of the assets of a person following death,”” says Rayner McCullough, a trustee with the Institute of Chartered Life Underwriters and Chartered Financial Planners of Canada. When a person dies intestate without a valid will — the property is divided according to provincial laws and regulations, In many instances where there's no will, mo surviving spouse and no children, parents, brothers, sisters, nephews or nieces, the property is equally distributed among more distant family members like second or third cousins, McCullough says When there is no will and no next of kin, the estate goes to the Crown and placed in a consolidated revenue fund for government use. If real property such as land or con- tents of a home are involved the estate, the Crown can sell the property, says Roy Clark, legal director for the public trustee's office in Ontario. Should someone tater legally prove to be an heir to the estate, a maximun of 10 years’ worth of interest will be paid, Clark says. A complicated formula comes into play when a person dies intestate leaving more than $75,000 as well as a spouse and childfen, McCullough says. But money essential to paying off a mortgage, running a household and raising children can be frozen for years when part of the estate goes to a minor who must reach legal age before taking advantage of it, he warns. A will is essential regardless of marital status or whether children are involved, advises McCullough. Many people'today make sure they have a will, but there ate those with delusions of immortality and so who don't update their desires, says Mills, Others are just plain” super stitious.
