During the same period the actual wage per hour has enaeed there has been a steady erosion in our hours of work. Last year support staff saw hours cut from TA’s, CCW's, Cler- ical and Bus Driver's. ‘There are in fact few full time factors in the salary portion of the budget which should be examined. For instance in a district the size of Castlegar, why do we need so many full time district administra- tors. Each of the district staff have a full time assistant and we have not one but two maintenance cate ble that over spending on administration is contributing to the wage overrun. Most district administrators have benefits which go beyond what any CUPE or CDTA member would get. As to the seven per cent increase Mr. Norman refers to, it was negotiated (in good faith) three years ago and was spread over this period. CUPE had in fact by other district employee: Mr. Norman did not have his facts Straight when it came to the lost. We lost not only the clerical nears referred to but also a .5 bus driving position and again each member will be laid off for one day while no other group of employees is effected. As for the .5 TA position Mr. Norman said was added; this in fact was budget- ed as a full time TA and was cut to 5 to help balance the budget. In addition, I believe it’s possi- ble that Mr. Norman could have used the help of a teaching assis- tant in mathematics. His figure of $18,500.00 is so inaccurate as to be laughable. The real figures of the cuts CUPE is asked to bear are in the neighbourhood of $60,000.00 plus. 't let it pass without comment ‘This year &t will only be the cheques of CUPE district management. This year it will only be the cheques of CUPE members which go down — how then can Mr. and my fellow CUPE members have had to endure is Mr. Nor- man's attack on the value of contri- butions to student leaming as well as the blame for budgetary deficits, He as much as implies'that we trict budget meeting, where Mr. Norman made these same kinds of attacks, I pick up the paper to find yet another attack published by Mr. Norman. I would suggest that Mr. Nor- man get his facts straight, (some- thing a former newspaper editor might do before publication), do some personal research into exact- ly what contribution CUPE mem- bers make and that he then apologize for these attacks.
