HOIST-HOUSE WAS SAVED The Flames Destroy Ore Bins at the Hoist- House and the Covered Tramway—Valiant Fighting of the Fire Brigade Saved the Hoist-House and Water Tank. Fire, due to an unknown cause, destroyed the ore bins at the head works ot the War Eagle tramway, together with the covered tramway leading from the hoisthouse to the bins, yesterday morning. Only the heroic efforts of the volunteer fire * brigade of the War Eagle and Cen- tre Star mines, together with sever- + al members of the city fire depart- ment, aided by a favorable wind, prevented the flames from also de- stroying the hoist-house, with its valuable machinery, and a water tank with a capacity of 30,000 gal- lons, which stands north of the tramway. , The flames apparently started in the tram-house, in which was the machinery of the gravity tramway and which stood immediately in the rear of the bins, and had gained much headway before they were dis- covered, about 10:30 a. m. This was probably due to the fact that, it being Sunday morning, there were few men working on surface. As the bins had not been used since shipments stopped on March 10, and they were go feet down the hill from the other buildings, nobody had any occasion to go near them. Anyway, when the alarm was given to C. V. Jenkins, the accountant, the high wind was sweeping the flames over the ore bins. The whistle was blown to call out the volunteer fire brigade, which worked urider the direction + of Charles Reinhart, the’ superintend- “ ent of construction, aided materially by Superi: d Davis, Assist: Superintendent Fitzwilliams, Guy Wilcox and the hose gang of the city fire brigade under direction of Assistant Chief Collins, The work of extinguishing the flames was done with 200 feet of two-inch hose and a duplex pump, which are kept in thé hoist-house, water being ob- tained from a 5o00-gallon tank in the same building. All hope of saving the ore bins and the covered tramway, go feet long, which extends from. within the hoist-house to the ore bins, was abandoned at the outset, as the flames had gained too much _ head- | way and were fanned by the strong wind. The great danger was that they might reach the inside of the hoist-house and the big water tank and all efforts were bent to averting this disaster. The covered tram- way connects with the tall gallows frame in the hoist-house, which is open at the top, and although the iron doors at the tramway exit from the hojst-house were closed, there was space enough underneath to make a strong draft which would draw the flames within the iron walls. All hands_bent their ener- gies to getting the flames under control and, when this was so far done that the men could approach the tramway, the latter was chopped away from the hoist-h » In Se — ‘ROSSLAND EVENING RECORD, MAY 28, 1900. who cannot be heard every day, and the opportunity should not be lost. 2 ces at Albo May Go Outon Ball *- M.
