By FRANK DERBY Sun staff writer Win for West for the East. Coming with just 34 seconds left, that goal should have ided the East with a boost, but The West dominated the Bast 9-2 in the Kootenay Intemational Junior Hockey League AllStar Game, played in Trail before an enthusiastic crowd of about 800 fans of the annual confrontation, It started as a classic match up with the West heading for the dressing room abead just 2-1 at the end of the first period. Mike New- man from Grand Forks opened the scoring just 36 into the Trail’s Mike Tavaroli broke their spirits by getting that back just 22 seconds later, Equally dispiriting was Gray's second goal which came just 10 seconds after the third period face- off. Darcy Kaban and Adam Dead- marsh rounded out the scoring, Although the final score reads blowout, the outstanding goaltend-. ing of Blair Allison and James k made the for game, Spokane’s Brett Hopkins tied it up midway with a short- handed goal and Peter Geronazzo gave the West the lead back with just 24 seconds left, The West AllStars broke the game_ open in the second. As one might expect ina game featuring the best in the league, action was fast with a lot of end to end rushes, crisp passing and great scoring chances for both teams. Somewhat surprising was ° the amount of hard hitting with their men into the boards. This year he has gotten a better understanding of the game and has more confidence. Dave is a steady, stay at home kind of defenseman who takes the body well and generally keeps them to the outside and bangs them on the boards. Sun staff writer Everyone expected Cranbrook to win last weekend’s junior girl’s basketball tournament at Stanley Humphries. No one expected the host team could hold them to just 49 points. Noel Caputo, one of the referees said between games, “Cranbrook will win this easily, they have a really good basketball program, and individually the girls have size and skill. They could beat most of the Seniorteams.” , In a character building final, Stanley Humphries Junior Girls actually led after the first quarter 12-6, Cranbrook reversed that in the second frame, outscoring Castlegar 17-5, but that left the SHSS girls only 6 points behind with the score 23-17 at the half. The Junior Rockettes were outscored 26-16 in the ‘ but gave Cranbrook a harder time than they anticipated. Rhonda Dawes provided the bulk of the offense for the Rockettes, scoring 12 points, but it was the defensive play of Melanie Strelive, Wendy Closkey, Tamara Rezansoff, and . Amy Polonicoff that impressed. to get to the finals, the Rock- ettes beat Creston in what amount- ed to a warm-up game, 46-12, Trail’s J.L. Crowe provided stiffer opposition and were threatening to make a comeback when the local girls ran into foul trouble in the fourth quarter, but the Rockettes hung on to win 47-39. i Sports is continued on pages 6B & 7B ~ Wednesday, January 30, 1991 The Castlegar Sun Park recieves MONTREAL (SNS) - The Gov- - emment of Canada will contrit This announcement was made $40 million to the City of Montre- al’s “Pare des iles” project, Pant of this amount will go towards con- verting the “Biosphere” into an environmental and water imerpre- tation centre and developing the cultural, educational, tourism and economic potential of ile Sainte- Helene and ile Notre-Dame, Court news In Castlegar Provincial Court last week, Stephen Keith Mofadden was convicted of carrying a load without side boards and fined $50, A bearing on assault charges of Manray Morzison Booth, set for Jan, 21, was put off till Feb. 4 for plea, Colin Caren was found guilty y in'the pr of Mr, Jean Dore, Mayor of Montreal, by Mr, Robert R, de Cotret, federal $40 million from feds sphere" which was built to house Look to the Sun for. your advertising needs.
