Page B10 The Castlegar Sun Wednesday, July 26, 1995 Youthspeak column will have something for young and old This is the first of many month- ly columns which the Castlegar Youthspeak Society is taking on to express a personal view about the society and certain issues which we are embarking on. Every month this column will be written by a different youth to enable the community to see things from another perspective In this first issue I am going to discuss about the statement of activities concerning the Castle- gar Youthspeak Society, our goals and fundraising First, Youthspeak was devel- oped to represent the social, emotional and political needs FOR THE MOST DOMESTIC CARS AND LIGHT TRUCKS Service includes: * Pressure test cooling system for leaks * Test radiator and rad cap + Up to 4L Motorcraft antifreeze/cootant * Check heater and defroster for proper * Flush idt extra $38.95" “Price does not include tax DON'T FORGET TO FLUSH. VIR 2T1 « Sapoeth hones. ane clamps 365-0202 QUALITY CARE of youth, to encourage and sup- port the education and develop appropriate use of political process, to educate the Castle- gar community to youth needs, and finally, to provide a forum to address youth issues and concerns. Some accomplished or ongoing goals of the society include things such as to survey the youth of Castlegar in order to find the focal issues and needs of the majority and to heighten the profile of the focal issues and what is lacking in the community regarding youth. Others. are to enlist the aid and cooperation of associations or persons who already have expertise in this area, to estab- lish a newspaper column repre- senting youth in the community which has obviously been accomplished, and to secure funds through donation, grants and fundraising for Youthspeak projects. Youthspeak’s main goal at this time is to raise funds for a Youth Centre in Castlegar. Some things which we would like this centre to contain are things such as: a skate park, an arcade, dance/music/place to jam area, coffee/juice bar/tables, an art YOUTH SPEAK GEOFF FONTES We also plan to hold regular fundraising events with the themes of: youth; fun; health; cooperation and community. Others are to invite interest- ed community adults and youth to work with the society in pro- viding a healthy, safe environ- ment for youth to spend leisure time in, to work with existing organizations and service clubs cooperatively, to maintain an open, non-confrontational part- nership with the City of Castle- gar and to express ideas, concerns and needs to local politicians in order to create a wall, a store for teen clothing and 4 part-time youth worker. To accomplish the above, Youthspeak needs youth and adult support to reach its goals. This means having to attend meetings and helping out with some ising events. In order to help accomplish these purposes we have elected youth executive and directors to speak on behalf of Castlegar youth at regularly held meet- ings; are in the process to sup- port and organize youth to speak at City Council meetings and in public arenas on issues and concerns regarding Castle- gar youth and have researched and developed grant proposals to obtain funding for our goals. ig P P To date the Castlegar Youths- peak Society has been involved in; Earth Day clean-up project; Sunfest parade (a special thank you to Mr. Bill Whitehead for providing a Youthspeak logo on his car, a float, and for all of this valuable time and effort); volunteering for security at youth dance; KBS concession Stand button-selling as a fundraiser; Christmas carol singing for a senior citizens’ home; and many more. From the above mentioned I hope I have shed some light on our society, answered some questions, and above all gained even more support from the community for Youthspeak. A.M. One chance It seems fitting to end the birth order series in July, since it's the month of my birth (and my twin brother Buz). Sometimes birth and death are only a breath apart In tribute to my twin whom you have met from time to time in this cofumn, this may be his last birthday unless God directs a miracle his way. He, like so many others, has been battling cancer. “I love you Buz, thank you for being a part of my life.” It makes me aware of how precious life is. One of my great- est fears is that I will come to the end of my time and I will not have lived. There is a saying that is so true, “Life is what happens while we are preparing to live.” It's happening folks, it’s here, it’s passing by. What are the things you have been meaning to do, hoping would happen, wishing for? What if this;was your last year, month or day? What would be your greatest regret? What would be the most courageous thing you have done? What would your epitaph read? This past year I have travelled many miles.. I have been going to see my children and grandchil- dren who are the loves of my life. I have challenged the winter roads (and lost as I sat in the Coquallia ditch waiting for a tow truck). Shaken but not willing to give up, I determined that I would not sit in a rocking chair full of fear waiting for winter to pass. I told the people in my church that I would undoubtably die on the road going somewhere! It wasn’t said in a foolish bravado way.. It was said sin- ¢erely. Life is too shén to be full of fear! What are you afraid of? Is it keeping you from that goal, thai wish that is buried deep inside? How long will you play it safe? All change involves risk. Risk is risky! Maybe you will be rejected or turned down or laughed at if you go after that dream. Ah, but maybe you won't! Maybe it will open a whole new exciting door. When I came to the beautiful Kootenays, I didn’t know anyone. I came with my “faith” in God who promised to look after me. I came with “hope” my work would be received and needed. I came with a bag full of fears, but I came anyway. This has been one of the most exciting years of my life. The work I do as a counsellor and teacher has been accepted and I've felt needed and wanted. In a small way I have become a part of this community. Thank you for opening your doors and letting me in. i © All Makes - Models © Complete Radiator Work © Custom Work ALL GENERAL AUTOMOTIVE REPAIR Mon. - Fri. * 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Sat. ¢ 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. LTD. CASTLEGAR MUFFLER 365-0100 1335 Columbia Ave., HTER SIDE The Castlegar Sun Ann Landers Syndicated Columnist ——$——_____—I Dear Ann Landers: Regard- ing Mrs. Dixon who wrote because her husband wanted to name their child Mason: Why not? My maiden name was Rose Rose. My mother's name is Rose Rose (hers by marriage, mine by birth),"In fact, I attributed my sense of humor to the fact that I had such an unusual name. As a high school cheerleader, I once was introduced at a foot- ball game. The announcer said, and here is the daughter of Ted Rose and Rose Rose, Rose Rose.” The audience roared with laughter. I was not the least bit embarrassed. I had been Rose Rose all my life. I went to school with Scott Scott. I once met a Mary Christmas. I even Seriously thought about keeping my maiden name when I got mar- ried because I didn't want to lose the fun of being Rose Rose. If you ask most of us with unusual names, you might find that we like them just fine. What would I say to the par- ents-to-be? Do the two of you have a good sense of humor? If so, chances are that your child will have one, too. He might have to put up with school yard teasing, but it won't take ttim long to learn to accept it with good humor. — R.R.W., Charleston, W. Va. Dear Rose: Thanks for the great testimonial. Read on for more. My name really IS Mason Dickson. Actually, it is Donn Mason Dickson, but I have always gone by Mason. When my mother became unexpected- ly pregnant 37 years ago, my parents decided to name me Donn after an uncle, but they didn't have a middle name picked out One night, my father was playing cards with some of his friends and jokingly said, “We are going to name the baby Mason Dickson because this is where we draw the line on hav- ing any more kids.” The joke caught on, much to my mother's surprise, and they did indeed name me Donn Mason Dickson, thinking nobody would ever call me Mason, Ironically, Mason stuck, and no one has ever called me Donn. My advice to Forth Worth is Go for it. I've had a lot of fun with this name, and people always remember me. — D Mason Dickson in Calif.
