Funding for the program was. recelved from the B.C. ministry of, labor's Youth Employment Program. Yuan Is shown with Dr. Dorothy Jeffery, a UBC research scientist In pharmaceutical sclences, and daughter Barbara, Program Encourages Medics To Work in Smaller Centres Castlegar is among the ; smaller cities and towns across B.C. at which 58 University of B.C. second-and-third-year medical students will work with family physicians this summer. Working’ with Dr. W.M. Yule of Castlegar, Bernadette Yuan will be among the stud. ents participating in a program intended to encourage.them to practice in smaller communities when they graduate. A. recommendation that directors’ While working with the family physicians, the student doctors will receive between $700 and $800 a month from the - provincial ministry of labor's Youth Employment Program. The 58 student doctors are among the 620 UBC students who have received YEP grants to carry out summer projects related to their field of study, Grants -to UBC students this year will total $1.5 million. ‘Land Commission ‘Badly ‘Informed,’ Says Director. _the commission's decision to d to i ».Fequest for exclusion of Area I from : the Agricultural Land. Reserve be. rejected: indicates:-: ¢ B.C, Land Commission “is ¢ badly,-informed as to the economies of this area." . That was the . reaction recently of Area I director John Moran, who represents the Kootenay River valley between Castlegar and South Siocan, to a land commission letter tabled by the regional district board. Moran, who originally sought the RDCK board's sup- port for the proposed land freeze release in order to allow more housing and ‘boost em- ployment in the area, criticized Minister. Rafe Mair that the entire area not be excluded from-the ALR and he said -he did not.agree with the letter’s dismissal of the request as “unrealistic”. : “I firmly believe that the land commission, in Burnaby, is badly informed on the econom- ics of this area,” he said. “We are sitting on the largest block of hydroelectric power in Cana- da and we're exporting it. to Washington, providing them with employment, and here we are sitting here with a 10-per- cent rate of unemployment,” he said. “And the land commis- sion's down there saying no to everything.” Each medica) student works with a family physician who uses his:time and exper- ience to show what medicine is all about on the firing line of smaller éommunities, An informal ‘survey of senior students last year indic- “ated that a large number of. them planned to practice as family physicians in smaller communities throughout the province, and many said their exposure to working in rural settings during their second year was what made them decide. As in many provinces, there is a greater number of doctors per capita in the larger cities of B.C. than in smaller centres. Medical educators * have thought that part of the reason for the. shortage. might be ., becatse “medical “stidéats “ré-): ceive much of their training in sophisticated hospitals in large cities . where . highly trained ’. specialists are located. So the second-year rural program was set up to expose students to medicine practised in a different setting. Director of the second-year rural program is Dr. William Buchan of the University of B.C.'s department . of. family practice, Dr. Buchan practised as a family physician for 14 years in Whitehorse in .the Yukon before joining the Univ- ersity. Throne Speech Renews ~ Promises by Government British Columbia's Social Credit government indicated last week it intends to keep the promises made in its bid for re-election in the May 10 provincial general election. The throne speech,. last Wednesday, launching the gov- ernment's second term in office, repeats promises contained in the March 22 throne speech which provided the planks in the Social Credit election plat- form. And the government is expected to present an abrid- ged version of its $4.56 billion budget, containing the remain- ing promises, to the legislature last Friday. The last session was ended by the election called April 3, the day after the record budget was presented to the legisla- ture.. Debate on the throne speech at that point had been completed. The new throne speech, read by Lt.-Gov. H.P. Bell-Irv- ing, was an abbreviated rehash of the March 22 speech which contained a little something for nearly everyone.
