a 20, 1901 SPORTS SCHOOL SPORTS GIRLS BASKETBALL If Stanley Humphries secondary school is the king of the hill in girls basketball in this area, Kinnaird Junior secondary is the ladder SHSS used to get there, And, in fact, the junior school has a hill of its own it can claim to rule. The Grade 6 to Grade 8 school proved that again last weekend when three of its girls teams brought home championships. The Grade 8 girls, who went un- defeated this season, won the West Kootenay championship Friday in Beaver Valley. Then on Sunday, two Grade 7 girls teams were consolation event winners at the 24-team Basketsmall Jamboree in Vancouver. Add those titles to the SHSS senior girls team’s bronze medal in the provincials Saturday in Ar- mstrong, and that's four girls basketball titles in one weekend. Judging by the way they're playing at the junior level, continued prosperity at the high school is almost a given. “We're certainly a feeder system," said Grade 7 girls coach Closkey, who is married to SHSS senior girls coach Jack Closkey. “If the kids are successful at this level, and if they can go down to something like that at UBC and see what happens, that makes them really keen about the game,’’ she said. KJSS beat Beaver Valley 34-31 Friday to win the championship in the four-team event. KJSS had earlier beaten Rossland and Nelson to advance to'the final. “She played unreal,’ Grade 8 coach Carolyn Catalano said about Goolieff. “She had four fouls early in the (championship) game, so she had to play exceptionally well to stay in the game. “I was really proud of them all, they were missing some players and a couple got fouled out, so they really had to dig down deep. They really wanted it."” At the hk HH ~ Shawna Harshenin led the KJSS A team in scoring at the tourney.
