Maybe someone in that category will come forward to offer their services. Anyway, while I was speaking to Jim Markle on this subject he passed along the information that theĀ· KIJHL had held their annual meeting in Spokane over the weekend. Jim was re-elected to the president's chair with Wayne Edward the West division vice-president and Ian Currie of Creston to fill that position for the East division. Donna Price is league secretary again and Tom Homersham of Kimberley will carry on as treasurer. Keith McFadyen of Nelson will be back again as league statistician and president Markle has still to appoint a referee-in-chief. Grand Forks Border Bruins did not show up at the meeting, neither did the Junior Smoke Eaters. No explanation for these absences was given. Grand Forks is faced with unpaid fines and assessments totalling some $700 which have to be paid by August 1 or their fanchise will be suspended by the league. Nelson will play host to the 1982-83 all-star game, the wilh Hary Pepper showpiece of the KIJHL. It was held in Creston last year and the West won it. Two scholarships donated by the Jones Boys Marine in Kaslo under a newly-formed award program by the league were won by Rossland's Murray Walters and Mike Hall of Cranbrook. They are worth $250 each. One sponsor has come forward for 1982-83, they are Chevron of Canada. One more is still needed. The league has adopted a league jacket and it will be in the colors of the New York Rangers of the NHL. The KIJHL has been one of the fastest-growing leagues in its category in Western Canada. It has a wealth of talent in its executive body and some excellent young talent on its teams. All in all the league can look forward to a really bright future. Rossland's team in the Trail Commercial Fastball League, re-named Rossland Legion, won their first contest of the new season, a 14-4 win over Columbia Pumping. Talking of summer sports, Rossland's Minor Soccer program is really burgeoning. This year over 200 kids are registered and ;& .A the powers that be have decided to withdraw from the Trail league and form their own. This is certainly a major departure. One of the main snags in the way would have to be the lack of playing fields. Jubilee Park is heavily used during any summer season and alternate sites are being examined. There are a couple of other areas. One is an extension at Jubilee to make for another field suitable for games in the lower categories in minor soccer and another is an area in the Rossglen district which will be examined and possibly developed.
