Federal government core: funding for the National Ex- hibition Centre in Castlegar has been increased from $18,000 to $21,000 for the year 1981, This was announced at the second annual genoral meet- ing of the West Kootenay Cultural Society, which ad- ministers the centre. The NEC in Castlegar is one of a number of exhibition centres built across Canada, with federal government as- sistance, as a centennial gift to the country. Some centres have already been closed due to two main factors; they did not meet the required programs standard, and lack of sufficient local regional financial support, In view of this fact, the an- nouncement of the increase in federal support, although very minimal, was. received with satisfaction and some pride. During the meeting, Ber- nard Bloom, administrator, reviewed highlights of the past year, which included some overwhelmingly suc- cessful shows — Shell Canada Collection; Kootenay Quilts and Coverlets; Juried Art Show and Community Art Show, to name a few. He also mentioned a few exciting events scheduled: for the upcoming year, CASTLEGAR NEWS, May 20, 1981 Jack Johnston presented the nominating committee's slate of directors for the next year. This included — Heidi Berger, Ann Chursinoff, Jack ° ' Johnston, Marjorie MacBain, Jeremy Palmer, Matt Rohn and Harold Webber. — from Castlegar; Peter Oglow, rep- resentative from the Douk- hobor Historical. Society; Mary Kendy, representative from Salmo; Edith Mowatt, representative from the Slo- ean Valley; Dr. Velen Fan- derlik, representative from Trail. A representative from Nelson is yet to be appointed. A special vote of thanks was expressed to Allen Sel- bie, Mrs. Dorothy Miller- Tait, Mrs, Arlene Ommund- son and to Brian Marrion and Jedd Erwin of DTUC for extraordinary service to the exhibition centre during the year. Pollowing adjournment, refreshments were served, and those in attendance browsed through the galler- ies for a last look at the Community Art Show. It was. taken down this past week- end to make room for an arts and crafts display by Grades 7 and 8 of the Trail Junior High School, in the small gallery; and Evelyn Arm- strong’s show “Mono — Prints and Other Works” in the large gallery. Even worse, says Newsline, artist Fred Labitzke used photographs of U.S. nuclear research as a model. With Canadian nuclear facilities and artists available, it asked, “Did the post office commission an American artist who used a U.S. nuclear research laboratory for inspiration to produce the design for a Canadian first-day cover and stamp? Well, apparently not. Post office spokesman Mike Rapsey, after some digging, reported that the .35-cent stamp in question was designed by Jacques Charette from photos by Hans Blohm, both of Ottawa. And the official first-day cover or envelope was de- signed by post office artists. artists. But Labitzke did design a first-day cover to get with, the new stamp — Newsline publishes a picture of it. Rapsey says some big stamp firms or private organizations sometimes produce their own first-day covers. But the Labitzke cover was not the official post office cover, he said. And the stamp itself is all-Canadian — “We never hire or commission anyone other than a ” Canadian.” And,.we'll show you a. $260 saving! Summer vacation season is upon us!
