The two sides had agreed upon a midnight Friday deadline, but they waved that in favor of continued negotiations. Emcon spokesman Joe Mottishaw said the bargaining continued because both parties were too close to a deal to walk away from the table. “It never got to arbitration,” Mottishaw said. “(The two sides) came down to the last few items and managed to settle it.” Mottishaw declined comment on the package, saying only that the two sides shook hands and walked away from the table. With the tentative agreement in place, Mottishaw. said Emcon employees returned to full shifts “by 7am. Saturday.” The union is expected to vote on the contract this week. Citizens band together Scott David Harrison EDITOR There’s a new face on Castlegar’s political scene — C The Coalition Unaccepting Rash Bureaucracy has entered municipal politics with a bang, ready “to make city council accountable.” Previously known as_ the Concerned Citizens Coalition, CURB held its founding meeting last week, electing a seven-member executive.. President Mike O’Connor and Vice President Walter Lutz _head Castlegar’s first-ever citizens group, which is already boasting a membership 50 strong. “It all goes back to the paving referendum,” O’Connor said -Tuesday. “We had ker then and we never got the answers. We're still not getting answers “to all our questions,” O’Connor said. Promising to be “a watchdog with input,” O’Connor said CURB will demand answers on Castlegar’s financial future. He said council appears content to spend millions when it has nothing in the bank. “The climate is not good right now for all this spending,” said O’Connor, pointing to Cominco layoffs and pending cutbacks at the Castlegar rao pap “In fact, it’s exceptionally bad.” O’Connor said the price of capital projects like downtown revitalization, the new city works yard, city hall renovations and sewer repairs will cost citizens some $14.4 million over 10 years. “Those are a lot of dollars and I think we need a lot of answers before we start spending that much money. “We want to have a say in what and where they are spending our tax dollars,” O’Connor continued. “We will demand those answers.” O’Connor-said Castlegar citizens are tired of being left in the dark about their financial future. He said homeowners are concerned about the impact of spending on their tax bills. “This council seems to being saying ‘we've been elected for three years so we don’t have to listen to you,” but that’s not it,” he said. “We’re saying, ‘you’re going to listen.” please see CURB page 5 S CASTLEGAR-ROBSON BRIDGE, PA
