Purchases from private individuals can often result in problems for the buyer. Usually no receipts are issued, no guarantees given (although plenty of promises may be made), and there's no chance of returning the item if you aren't happy with it, If you're. buying from a private seller, don’t be embar- rassed about insisting on a re- ceipt, and’ have the seller-write on it any promises or state- ments he makes about an item's quality. If he refuses, that’s a good indication you should re- consider your purchase. Try to take someone along with you who knows something about the item you're buying, and who can serve as a witness to any statements the seller makes. Don't buy items until you've had a chance to see if they'work. This can be difficult with items like washers or ranges where plumbing or wiring hookups are required, but remember what happened to the woman described at the beginning of this column. You may find asking for proof of the seller's claims, or written confirmation of verbal guarantees a little awkward at first; but if you behave in a pleasant, business-like manner, the seller should respond in kind. If he doesn't, look else- where. over response you have given our petition. There is no doubt in my mind, that if this kind of support continues, we will very shortly have the volunteer fire department we Operation Appears Unsuccessful A man who impregnated his wife after undergoing a vasectomy is entitled to sue for malpractice, the state Court of Appeals has ruled in Lansing, Mich. Most Expensive Bricks Crooks had the right house, name and subject, but they didn't escape with the Valen- tine wall. What they did manage to do was rob a man named Valentine whe happened to be living on a street named Wall. But the 2,000 pound St. Valentine's Day Massacre Wall, the probable target of the robbery, remains hidden in a Fraser Valley warehouse, wait- ing for a newowner with a healthy wallet and a passion for grisly reminders of the past. Vancouver promoter Geo- rge Patey, who bought the brick wall from the Chicago warehouse where seven mem- bers of the Bugs Moran gang were gunned down Feb. 14, 1929, had his Wall St. house broken into recently. He lost about $5,000 worth of cash and valuables, he said, but is relieved the crooks didn’t get the wall, which he bought after the warehouse was torn down in 1967. A houseguest named Bill. Valentine—an actor who has das a mass erred in instructing the jury on the rules of the case and the corfditions under which dam- ages might be awarded. He had told jurors that damages result- ing from the on the Hawaii 5-0 television show—also lost about $1,000 in travellers cheques and cash, he said. Meanwhile, the wall has een di i reg: naney might be offset by the benefits of the new child. That ruling, the court said, would effectively ban suits over unwanted pregnancies, because ; the value of a child is always higher than costs of an un- | wanted birth. The appeals court said the Bushmans may collect damages —if their charge of malpractice is proven—for pain and suffer- ing of the pregnancy, the cost of the vasectomy, the husband's loss of his wife's companionship during the pregnancy, and medical costs of the pregnancy and birth, In striking down the judge's instruction to the jury, the court said no juror would declare that the cost of, the pregnancy exceeded the benefit of the child, and thus award damages. . and the most See the latest in ’ Nikon...
