Cominco employees remove surplus in preparation for demoli By CasNews Staff Cominco has shelved plans to use the Soviet-de veloped kiveet process at its new lead smelter in Trail in favor of a West German design Ina prepared release the company says it has signed a contract with Lurgi GMBH allowing Cominco to construct and operate the lead smelter using the German based QSL process. Lurgi will supply the reactor and certain engineering services relating to the process. Where feasible, com ponents will be manufactured in Canada “This new smelter will replace the existing one at Trail with state-of-the-art lead smelting technology that will result in significant operating cost reductions and environmental improvements,” Cominco said in the release It will have a capacity of up to 160,000 metric tons per year of lead bullion The QSL process was invented about professors Paul E. Queneau and Reinhardt Schuhmann Jr. in the United States and developed by Lurgi over the last decade, hence the designation QSL (Queneau Schuh mann Lurgi) 10 years ago by be the site of the new lead smelter. In that time the plant has treated concentrates from a variety of mine lead producers all over the world Lurgi GMBH, based in Frankfurt, is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Metallgesellschaft AG engaged in process technology, engineering and plant contracting through out the world Its main fields of activity are upgrading of raw materials, energy technology and environmental pro tection Meanwhile, engineering studies are already under way and demolition work on the site has started. Pro jected completion is the summer of 1989 The first phase is expected to cost $171 million and the second phase $89 million About 40 people have been recalled for the demolition work, which will take at least a year June a big month OTTAWA (CP) June was a banner month for rest aurateurs, caterers and Lav ern owners in British Colum bia who saw receipts increase by 23.1 per cent over the same month in 1985.
