Among the items — a veritable cross-section of Canadian farming history — was a 1902 Buffalo Pitts steamer, as well as Titan, Avery, Wallis and Case tractors, 45 well pumps and a single-cylinder, seven- horsepower Judson gas engine from what may be one of the largest collections of gas engines ever sold in Canada. Winje, 77, is selling the machinery because of health problems. He discounted reports that vandalism of his collection led to the sale. In a recent letter to the Nelson News, Winje said there was ‘‘never one trace of vandalism” from the thousands of people who have visited his display ““However, the spring in the old clock just won’t function the way it should (and I) feel that I am letting you all down, but there is no way out, anyway, it was fun while it lasted,”’ he wrote. A former welder and millwright, Winje, originally from Minnesota, settled in the Slocan Valley in 1960. His family farmed for 50 years and his interest in farming is reflected not only in his collection of machinery but also in his stark, skeletal metal sculptures of humans and animals which populate his property. Winje started creating the sculptures for his grandchildren who had never experienced farm life. His first piece, a threshing scene, has been joined by several other scenes of farm life.
