The The Robson Pool has stood the test of time despite many obstacles. It was built in 1965 by B.C. Hydro at the same time as the Hugh Keenleyside Dam. It was made as a recreational facil- ity for the workers and manage- ment who needed to relax after a hard day. ‘When the Dam was completed, the pool was seldom used until the Rob- son Recreation Society made a pitch to take over the pool im the late 1960s. B.C. It had no washrooms or adequate change rooms, and the paint was already starting to peel away. The people of Robson banded together to fix the pool along with a new citizen named Les Godberson who just hap- pened to stick his head around His first priority was further renovations to the pool since it still had no heat and needed new remembers the kids taking swim- ming lessons in the spring and still marvels at how they handled the chilly water When B.C.’s one hundredth birthday rolled around in 1971 Godberson got his grant and was finally able to bring natural gas heat to the Robson Pool along with a new coat of paint. A lot of work, time and effort went into the pool over the years and there were times when it seemed the pool was destined to go the way of the dinosaurs. But the people of Robson continued to fight back and refused to let their pool die. “T am proud of the fact that we were able to keep it going and many children became swim- mers there,” said God berson. “It's a good repperwaity for children to’ swim and we have a pretty good com- petitive swim team because of it. The pool is something the of Rob- son ‘feel they own. By and large, the people of Robson are really proud of poo! Despite the late night calls to brtak-up i pool parties and romantic rendezvous, God- berson still looks back fondly on his experiences with the pool. His perseverance in keeping the pool in good shape ultimately led to the creation of the Robson River Otter Swim Club in 1982 by Coralea Schuepfer.
